Weekend Warrior Stage Lighting Discussion

I just picked up an Obey70 on CL for $60. Rackmount, MIDI, DMX. 40 will do that too, I believe, and they make one with built-in DFi

I saw the Obey 40 w/ D'Fi. I'd prefer a standard 1U device rather than the top mount style of the Obey series. The 40 is 3.5" tall so it would be 2U if I stuck it on a shelf, but possibly 3U depending on how close the controls are to the device above. I'm definitely going to keep it on the short list though.

Ideally I'd like to mount in it my amp rack which is 4U worth of stuff, so at a minimum I'd be looking at a 6U or 8U rack.

I'd be good with a PC based controller as long is it had MIDI and the ability to run as a standalone device. I.E. program it at home, then bring it to a gig without a computer.

One other thought (or two) is it's very shallow, so could get a mixer rack and put it the top. Or, maybe mount it in the back of something. Not sure there is a 1U that does that. Probably, but may be better off going full-on PC/tablet based at that point.

That's exactly what I was looking at doing if I went with the Obey series. I'm just holding out to see if there is a different solution that doesn't require me getting a mixer top rack case.

I needed to mount one Chauvet Q6 SlimPAR and one Chauvet LX5 Moonflower fixture to the top of each main. I wanted to get the Q6 up high so that I could use it as a front wash for the singers. I ended up buying some 12” corner braces that were powder coated black. I bolted them together in a “C” shape and mounted them to the top of the mains using the M10 flypoint bolt. I stuck some felt padding on the bottom to prevent scratching. Worked great!

I own (2) of the Chauvet WashFX lights. I'm only using them for static-color stage wash. The problem is, they are way too bright for the tight spaces I play. Can somebody suggest a simple/inexpensive DMX device for dialing down the intensity of these units? I'm not adverse to buying a couple new LED lights if somebody can recommend something with built-in dimming control.

Looking at the dmx channels for that fixture a controller will dim the static colours but not the auto programs. You can use them in 7 channel dmx unless you want to access the colours for each zone (e.g., in 7 channel mode you can only adjust all the bulbs at once, but in 23 channel mode you can adjust the lights in each of the 6 zones independently). The special programs can't be dimmed.

Thx for the reply. I'm usually just using the WashFX for a front wash on dark stages...set to the static "amber" color. They are so bright that the band is wincing and complaining. I'd rather not have to deal with a DMX controller, but I might be willing to try one out. After doing a little research today, it seems as I may be able to program a static color using the built-in controls and adjusting the RGB color values.

Also, I see there is now a WashFX 2 unit out that appears to be dimmable using the included remote. Since I don't play a lot of shows, I'm hesitant to shell out more money on lights.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how you were using it (edit...missed it in you very first sentence...lol); it looks like you can fade all the leds in custom colour mode if you are just leaving them all on one colour.

I don't see a master dimmer channel when you're in 7 channel mode (based on the manual). The master dimmer is only in 23 channel mode which is going to limit your options with "budget consoles." The Chauvet Obey 40 which is a good entry level controller is only 16 channels max per fixture. The Obey 70 however will do 32 channels.

I would get a basic controller like the Obey 70. You'll have so much more control over your lights and it will grow with you as you add more lights. Check eBay.

I use the Obey 40 to do exactly that with my WashFX. That was the only unit with enough channels to control the WashFX. I tried the Obey 10 to no avail.

Well, over a year after my last one died, I finally grabbed a new fog machine. Walmart was clearancing out their Halloween decor for 75% off, and they happened to have a 400w fog machine with a new price of $28.88 which means the machine was $7.22 pre tax... Also grabbed a couple of half gallons of fog juice on clearnace...

For the size shows we do, this little fog machine will do the trick... Only issue is, the thing is putty colored, not matte black... I can find a way to hide it though...

Just searching the net for Bands using Video Projectors, and this thread is the closest.
Been using a custom built lighting and video projection rig.
I have 16 led PAR cans, 8 led globe moving thingys, 10 lasers, 6 white halogen crowd blinders, all DMX controlled using a laptop running Freestyler DMX and a custom midi foot pedal to change lighting scenes (scenes, strobes, chases, etc).
Previously been using video projector and laptop running a Kaleiderscope visual, but have an annual festival we organise coming up in 3 weeks,
and I have now got 3 video projectors rigged up to make one double width wide screen display (3 screen extended desktop) which will cover one side of the stage to the other.
I am using a video presentation software called Screen Monkey and another custom midi foot controller to trigger video clips and a few live USB webcams, the software loops the video clips and does crossfading transitions.

The whole system is able to be controlled by me foot tapping while playing bass, so it is always changing.

And I just found some great material for a projection backdrop, painters plastic drop sheets, they are bright white and highly reflective.

Here is a picture of my band using just a single projector,

That sounds AMAZING. Wow. Do you have any video of it?

Ok - had been a little while since I saw any action on this one......

I bought two Stagg Lighting/Speaker Brackets
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/acc...g-extension-for-speaker-stand/j51867000000000

and Two ADJ TPAR Dotz set ups -
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/american-dj-dotz-t-par-system

I have been using them mostly one at a time, for the smaller venues.

This is one - on the viewers right - you may see it from time to time. The overheads were on - but very low. I had the change much quicker than i meant to. Please overlook clicking noise in the beginning - my friend live posting : )

This is to show the lighting - BTW - focus lenses removed to change focus from 45 deg to 90 deg for better wash

Same room a month earlier - 45deg focus lenses on

That looks really effective. I'm going to check out Screen Monkey. Have you found any software that integrates with DMX so you can control lights and projection in one package? There's one called Show Buddy Plus (?), but it's quite clunky looking to use, so I'm looking for alternatives. All the best. PETE

You can do projection, audio, and lights with QLC+.
