Weight Weenies - PSA

I don't discriminate on weight but I do on balance. 8 3/4 is darn good on a "Fender" bass but I personally wouldn't want to go much lower.
If I could get a P bass that weighs 5 lbs, I'd totally do it. But I do have a couple that weigh around 7 1/4 lbs, and they're not neck-divey at all. Had to replace the neck hardware on one with Hipshot Ultralites to do it, but you can have your cake and eat it, too, I've come to find out.

That's very cool, and I'm sure it keeps people "in the game" gigging that may have to slow it down do to physical limitations. If the guys with the most experience stop playing we all lose.
I play fairly aggressively sometimes, a bass that's too light starts to move and doesn't present enough resistance I guess. I tried one of the original Steinberger in the 80's and almost broke my nose.

Heehee! What's funny about that is I've never thought of Steineys as light. I actually thought they weighed a good amount for as small as they are.

or, oorrrrr....you could just play it 24/7 develop some shoulder muscles and after a while you wouldn't know you were holding it

This would make no difference. For most of us the strap would rest right up against the neck, where musculature is minimal. The pain comes from compression on the blood supply. Move the strap further out and the problem is reduced, but good luck keeping the strap on your shoulder. Move the strap to the headstock and the problem is eliminated, as the contact point with the body is changes.

Good. Very informative. Taking stuff off of something makes it weigh less. Sweet.
Thread title is offensive. A lot of people have physical limitations or preferences that work better for them. :rollno:

Actually I made my bass go from a 10 lb bass to 9 lb bass without doing any mods whatsover. Here is how I did it:

1) I took pictures of my 10 lb bass.

2) I listed it for sale on the TB classifieds.

3) I sold it.

4) I took the proceeds and bought myself a 9 lb bass

You're welcome, TalkBass!

Was the deal a "saw off"?

Sorry, I'll show myself out.

No, you modded a bass with new body, neck, and parts.

My first laugh of the day, thank you!!

Not judging or doubting in any way shape or form...your post just cracked me up!!

Glad you had a laugh. I did as well to most of the responses.

In fact, I AM a Weight Weenie, strictly <9lb basses for me and my bad shoulder. So yes, removing the guard and screws took off almost 4 ounces. A set of GB640s in the near future will puts the lovely jazz in my avatar (that I was almost going to sell due to weight) in usable territory.

So if you were one of those who needed to make this post all serious, maybe lighten up. I think everyone could use a laugh during these grim times.
