Weird wedding situation. Just read it...

You gotta think that the ritzy place might actually not allow that kind of music on the premises (at any volume). At least you can hope.

In this area of the country they allow whatever you want if you're paying them.

I grew up in Connecticut and can attest that they have their own
breed of redneck.

Picture Deliverance meets Jersey Shore.

OP, you need some new friends and a new band.

I'm not sure I follow exactly. People like Jersey Shore type folk are really limited to one county in NJ. They do not exist any other place in the country and certainly not in CT.

Although you can never have too many friends, these aren't the only ones, and I've got working band with guys that are on the same page as me.

I've been pretty PO'd with these guys and their lack of focus for quite a while, so I joined a 2nd band a few months back. Then I ended up quitting the band with these guys a few weeks back. Too much BS.

so you and 2 other musicians have "zero interest" in playing it but you're doing it so as not to "offend" your friend? Take some of the good advice here. Grow some cojones, say no, while there's still time for them to figure out alternate plans. The marriage you save could be your friend's.

Uhhh....only 2 of the 7 are from NJ. The rest are from NY and RI, so of course there would be some in between. and I can personally vouch for a HUGE population of that special kinda meathead all over Long Island for at least 2 decades before the show was created.

Jersey Shore-type meatheads (I won't use the normal term, since many are not of Italian descent, and in fact some on the show are not even italian) are like rednecks. They come from all over the country.

Although, that is the where the comparison ends.

Many years ago a bandmate talked me into playing his son's Bar Mitzvah against my better judgement. I consider playing the Hokey Pokey to a bunch 12 year olds the low point in my musical life. I vowed never again to play any kind of gig like this, including weddings.

A completely unrelated story, me and a friend were hanging out in Chapel Hill, NC and decided to head into a music venue to check out the band. The band was very loose, and different people were getting on stage. As we started talking to folks, we came to realize that this was a private wedding reception we had accidently crashed. Everyone was really nice, though, and wanted us to stay. Everyone appeared to be having a wonderful time, including the bride and groom. So who knows?

No. The drummer and I have zero interest. The other guitarist may or may not be interested, I don't know. He doesn't speak. I haven't spoken to any of them in a month anyways. I'm not in that band any more.

We're doing it as a favor to him. He asked. Nothing to do with not offending him. I already told him no a few months back. The rest of the band agreed. When I came back to practice the following week, the rest of the band was back on board to play. I stuck to my guns and said no. The week after that, he asked me to do this as a personal favor to him.

They have other plans, it's not like people are going to be attending a concert. They are not going to get divorced over this. The Bride WANTS us to play. She WANTS to see the Groom happy and enjoy himself while doing a little showing off. The Father of the Bride also plays drums, so both Bride & Groom want FOTB to come up and play a song or two with us.

It is stupid? Yes. Is it going to go over as both of them see it? Not in a million years. Short of me pulling a no show, is there anything that i can do about it? No.

I've never watched the show, didn't even know there were 7 people on it.
I did not understand the whole "special kind of redneck" comment...

If I play it, I WILL be borrowing or purchasing a video camera. I will also be asking my wife to make sure that she gets some crowd reaction shots.

Aha! Here is the very best idea I've seen in this thread.

You could make a mint selling video copies of the massive cluster**** that this event will surely be.

This scenario has nearly unlimited comedic value. I see America's Funniest Videos in your future.

Don't worry about playing bass too much. I'd be playing the situation for all it's worth.

This ^^^^
We used to get people all the time at gigs ask us if we wanted to play their wedding or their kid's weddings or whatever.
We always told them to do themselves a favor and hire a dj.
We'd be too loud, we don't know the f'ing chicken dance and we don't take a lot of requests.
They always walked away a little surprised but happier down the road. Not as happy as us though.

This is 100% not true

I'm pretty much done with this thread now. Flame away, I don't care. I feel like everyone is basically out to attack me at this point, when I started this thread to vent and see if I was crazy not to want random people play my rig.

you've also obviously never been to Long Island, or NJ. half the 'tards that dress like that? LI. we get very few of those in NJ. Thank god.

If I'm not mistaken...the JERSEY Shore is in NJ...and that is what this whole new stupid argument is now about.

Your punctuation is all over the place, so I really have no idea what you're trying to say.

This is so typical of CH/Carrboro. I love that place.
