Went to Sonic, didn't tip, let's talk...

Really? a penny is 1% of a dollar.
I will gladly take all of the pennies that you don't want!

Do you know that if just 1% of the people in the US gave me 1% of a dollar,
I'd get over $30,000. Heck yeah!

Just for the sake of conversation.
How much $$$ do you think that the oil companies make a year just by that 9/10ths. of a penny that they add to every gallon of gas they sell?
(checking wikki and doing some quick maths, I calculated that it's just over 12 million dollars a year.)

Yea but the whole country isn't giving you a penny and your not making .01$ off of the billions of gallons of gas sold...

Your talking about ONE penny.

They said it then selfs they were willing to tip1$ basically they have control issues in my book

I didn't say the whole country, I said 1% of it.
wanna get the ball rolling and donate a penny to the cause?
why not? it's only ONE penny.

I have been hitting the Sonic by me all summer. I love their Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog. I stop in a couple times a week and get a couple along with some tots and a shake.
They mainly have local high school kids working the lot. They are all friendly and fast. Most of the girls are on roller skates and are real good. One does a nice spin when she gets close to the truck. They get into it and have fun. The check is usually $11 and change. I always hand them $15 and tell them to keep the change. If I only have a 20 I take 5 back.

Don't be a cheap skate.

Actually, gas stations post prices at .9 because $3.49.9 sounds a lot less than $3.50 to many people.

Therefore, they are losing $1.2 million a year... :D

I went to a Sonic once, and my total came out to $6.99. I gave the server $7, and waited for her to come back with my penny. I also had a dollar bill for her.

I waited for about 5 minutes, during which there were zero customers beside me. This woman did not bring me my 1¢ change, I was duly upset at her lack of professionalism at not bringing my change, and offended by her theft of my 1¢, so I left, keeping the dollar I was going to give her and letting her keep the penny.

Wow.......

But I don't think that applies to sonic.

Actually, I didn't know this till a couple of irl Sonic carhops told me about it. It most definitely applies to Sonic, and quite the scam. What if they have a slow night or a run of stingy customers? Or even crappy cooks that can't get an order right to save their lives and piss off the customers, those carhops are the ones taking home garbage paychecks.

I always try to give a good tip, unless they really give me a reason not to.

I know they make minimum wage plus tips...

That's all I know

I went there to get a take out and they wouldn't serve me. They ignore everyone not in a car

No tip for them!

After a gig a few months ago, we went back to the hotel room and were quite hungry. My BL had the trailer hitched up to the truck, so going through a drive-through would have been difficult. Instead, we walked through the drive-through at the McDonald's across the street. Pretty funny stuff...we even had cars lined up behind us as we waited at the window for our orders.

This ^^^. All the waiters/waitresses I know get paid minimum wage but with tips it's actually quite a bit more then that. So if for some reason they got no tips, they'd still be getting paid.

Even if their hourly wage is not minimum wage, with or without tips, they still should be receiving minimum wage under the FLSA. It's a bit misleading when people say "servers don't even make minimum wage." While their base hourly pay may not be minimum wage, their employers are obligated to ensure that they are still making at least minimum wage.

Of course, I realize in a perfect world, that's not always the case, especially since a lot of the food service is an "under-the-table" business. I had a friend in high school who worked at an ice cream stand and made something like $3.00 an hour. The owner's reasoning was that the rest should be made up in tips. Who the hell tips at an ice cream stand, especially one where you pick up your food at the counter? Then again, when you're 16 or 17, who's savvy enough to know that you should be picking up the phone and calling the DOL's Wage & Hour division to make a complaint under FLSA? :hmm:

Without tips, servers and bus staff make d1©&. I know-I was a bus boy at an Italian restaurant in my teens.
If it's permitted (for example DD drive through has a tip jar) I'll always give them a buck or so. Unless they're unfriendly or rude, or screw up my order and give me an attitude about it, I always tip. I'm not rich, but I'm doing a lot better than they are. They can have a friggin dollar; it's not going to break me.

+1

In all of my years of eating out - and I eat out a fair amount - I can probably count on one hand the number of times where a server didn't deserve a tip at all.* But there are some people in this world who practically believe servers should bend over and kiss their asses. It's a job that I honestly don't know if I could do.

*With the exception of a local Pizza Hut I used to frequent that had incredibly bad service and I probably shouldn't have tipped when eating there (although I generally did).

My girlfriend worked at Sonic for 6 months.

Here's the way it worked: You make $5 an hour plus tips.

If you don't make enough recorded tips to cover minimum wage, the company covers the difference in your paycheck so you're always making minimum wage.

If you make more than minimum wage, the company cuts back your pay so you make minimum wage. If you happen to make more than minimum wage in tips, you get nothing from the company but can make say $10 or more an hour.

This, of course, encouraged people to not report tips. Managers encouraged this of their carhops.
