Westone Custom Ear Plugs

I have read the entire 33 page sticky, but before I take the plunge I want to get some current feedback from people who are using this product.

I called my local audiologist who deals with Westone products and found out that the ear mold would be $58 per ear. The earplugs would cost $175 and comes with 1 filter for a total of $291. The person I talked to said the total turn around time would be about 2 weeks. I can get in as early as next week for the molding if I want.

The specifics are that:

1. I am 52 years old, and I am sure that I have some degree of hearing damage already. My wife took me to see Aerosmith/Cheap Trick for my 50'th birthday and my ears are still ringing.

2. I still enjoy live music, but most places it is too loud for my tastes especially since I am paranoid about protecting what hearing I have left. I still want to enjoy a live gig and have good quality sound but not hurt my ears.

3. I have no problem spending $300 on ear protection since my hearing is priceless. I am looking at the Westone plugs because I am under the impression that they decrease the overall volume without making the music sound muffled like regular plugs do. That is what I am after.

4. I plan on having the plugs on my person at all times so that if I happen to come across a situation where the sound level is higher than I would like, I can just pop them in and life can go on.

So here is my question(s):

Am I getting the best bang for my buck with Westone? Preserving the sound quality is as important as decreasing the level.

I'm not sure if I can afford more than one filter right out of the gate. So if you had to choose 1 to start should I get the -9db, or the -15db. Keep in mind I want something that will take concert levels (think Aerosmith/CheapTrick loudness) and make it safe was well as volume levels in a bar show (in the audience). I'm guessing -9db would be enough for a bar or outdoor show, but would it be enough for the concert level, and would the -15db be too much attenuation for a bar show.

Sounds a little overpriced. I'd shop around a little bit. I paid roughly $150 for myWestones (plus I paid a little extra for a second set of filters), including an audiology exam and the molds. Quite honestly, it may be the best money I've spent on gear. I take them everywhere, and even use them in places like noisy restaurants and sporting events. You will not be disappointed with the audio quality. I have both 9db and 15db. No cons on the 15s, but I prefer the 9db. I tried many generic silocon plugs, and I feel there is no comparison to the quality f the Westones.
