"what are frets?”

okay let me start off by saying that I live in a small town that is mostly inveloped into evangelical pentacostalism and regional styles of music (bluegrass, jugband country, and LOTS of gospel!) A few weeks ago I was at a church inquiring about a empty bass position. The music director told me that they had a guy already. I asked if I could talk with him. I was curious as to any other instruments he could play. I assuming he played electric bass asked him what kind of bass he owned and he told me a "f bass”. The Im 20 and what is this face followed. I asked him if I could see it and he walks off the stage and comes back with a HUGE upright bass! mind you this guy is a 15 year old kid. I sat in service that night just because i wanted a good chuckle. The funny thing wasn't the kids playing but the fact that this little 5'4" kid was playing a upright bass that twice his size. He pulled it off though. kudos to him lol...(i'm not good at telling stories.....sorry...)

Hmmm...okay.

The kid was referring to the F-holes on his upright bass. I'm not seeing the humor, but it sounds like he taught you something.

Most upright players, who don't have frets to work with, do work with instructors, and it takes a lot of discipline to get to the point where, regardless of their stature, they can "pull it off" in church or anywhere else.

Again, I don't see the humor in this, but it sounds like you stand to learn a few things from this kid. Maybe you can get him to teach you a couple of scales?

I don't understand why a size differential is supposed to be funny. Do you also laugh at fat guys playing ukuleles?

If so, then you have some weird prejudice issues.

Nev, its cool man...you can wear lifts they are not that noticeable. You want the kind Tom Cruise wears? Let me know.

Its always hilarious when someone has to dissect something so simple as this story and make it into some sort of " prejudice" thing. Lighten up boss, change the tamp, wash the sand out...move on.

My good sir, size disproportion is the very essence of high comedy! It's intrinsically funny when large things are next to small things, especially when the large things are supposed to be small and the small things are supposed to be large! What a hoot!

;)

Perhaps you'd like to point that question at the OP, the person found the size differential to be funny.

But since you asked... sure, a large person playing a tiny instrument is slightly amusing. Even more funny, though, is a very large person on a small motorcycle.

I dont see how finding that funny is telling of any prejudice issues.
