What are great cheap basses?

Dean makes fairly decent basses that can be had for under $300 used.
I myself started out on a Dean Playmate which I still have...Since then though I've gone through close to 10 basses and ended up right back at Dean. My primary WAS a dean edge hammer but I just bought a MIM Fender Jazz that feels and sounds ****ing awesome!!
I'm at a crossroads..
I think I may be falling in love with fenders...Like I knew I would...

The Jay turser JTB-401 is a copy of the '54 Precision. It's a nice bass, simple but it does exactly what an early P does - it rocks! And some of those who have puled the pickup and tried a Fender pickup put the Turser version back - because they like it better.

Under $200 new if you look around. Install good flats and it's a great player! Comes in black, natural or ivory - and they may have added a sunburst.

There are a lot of brands that fit your price range - why don't you go to a local CG or music store, and try them out? There are many differences in necks, sound, feel, and looks.
It's the best & funnest way. :bassist:

Everybody here is going to tell you what they think is the best so I will too and add Ibanez SR/SRX series & Peavey AC BXP Millennium to the list.

I am not in the market for a bass, I just started a thread about a subject that interests me.

Next bass will probably be that Jazz bass I tried at GC but I first want to sell one of my current basses.

SX is like lottery...
I've had 3 p's
The first one is awesome, just a pickup change and it got killer
The second one has an horrible neck that was kinda loose (i sold it for $25)
The third one had crappy tuners and the knobs pop when you turn it (gave to a kid next door)

I've never had any issue with Squier classic vibe and vintage modified
