What are the 2 or 3 must have pedals?

Source Audio Motion Controlled Wah Pedal and Multiwave Bass Distortion.

I've been doing some work with a small pedal company called Source Audio. They make absolutely astounding pedals and they brought me in to help them build a line of bass effects. I've brought their effects into my rig and they are killllling it. Here is a video of the wah at Bass Player Live '09

Must haves are personal choice depending on personal needs and preference.

For me it's Line6 M9, Xotic Bass RC Booster, EHX LPB-1 (Just to balance level between basses)

on the floor a tuner and SABDDI are all I've used for a while. just ordered a pedal board to put an octamizer and doctor Q in the mix. we'll see ...

First I run into an equalizer then I split the signal into 4 parallel signals with a rolls mixer.

1 - I run one into the Line6 bass pod where I model an acoustic 360 with a rat distortion pedal. I use this to get a retro growlly distorted sound. Or I also model an Ampeg fliptop with the Rat Distortion pedal.

2 - The second signal goes into a Mxr bass di+. I use this pedal to get a clean modern sound. It also has a distortion button that can give a moderate to extreme amount of modern distortion.

3 - The third signal goes into a Marshall Guv'nor. This gives me an old 60s marshall stack sound. This can go from a small amount of distortion to an over the top marshall sound. This effect can give you a Chris Squire Yes sound or a heavy metal sound, or just a subtle amount of distortion.

4 - The fourth signal goes into a Tech21 vt bass pedal. With this effect I get a slightly dirty Ampeg SVT bass amp sound with a tube like growl.

Then I remix the 4 signals back together and run it into a bass amp, or pa, or studio mixer. Because the signals are parallel I can mix clean and overdriven sounds together and still get effect and a sound that punches through the mix.

2 or 3 "must haves". Tricky. Hard enough to pull it back to a dozen, "must haves". But truly, it would have to be 1- a tuner, 2- a compressor, 3- an eq, and 4- some dirt. Minimalist, it leaves out all the "fun stuff", modulation, filters, octaves. What's the fun in that?

I've been pretty much a bass-into-amp player for the last 15 years. Earlier this year, I got a Polish Love pedal because I wanted to add some more flavor. Shortly thereafter I got a cheap Ibanez Bass Synth. It's pretty fun to play with and putting those 2 together sounds pretty evil witht he right settings.

I have been GASing for an octave pedal, and as of late I narrowed my selection down to the MXR deluxe and the Octamizer. Being that I like a healthy helping of grit to my normal bass sound, perhaps the MXR is more up my alley.

But to answer the question...a "must have"? not really, these are just icing on the cake. The "must have" for me was the all tube head I'm playing through.

Outside a tuner, I think that a good compressor and something that'll add a bit of dirt and boost is fairly essential.

sansamp bddi,it gives you some distortion but my main reason is if i have amp or cab malfunction i have some control over my sound running through pa. its like having a backup.Ive had amp malfunctions and was very glad i had my bddi.
