Finished this one today and have to say it was very good.

Rankin can really move a story forward. If there's any criticism, it may be that his stories may be a bit complex in their eventual resolutions -- but they ring true and they are intelligently and vividly written.

This is the upcoming sequel in his new series, which I will certainly read:

Reading the A Song of Ice and Fire books. On the third one now, and they've all been very good so far.

Tried to read a book call Slam that I found at Big Lots for 50 cents. The beginning was terrible but after about 15 pages it got better. It must be I got used to the writing. It's not very interesting though, so I only got about 75 pages into it.

Also found a book called Fast Guns Out of Texas at my mom's house. Picked it up just for something to read, but it wasn't any good. It moves too slowly, and just assumes you're going to be interested in the characters, so it doesn't actually do anything to make you like them. When the story gets past the exposition it was too late for me to actually care about anything that was happening. Also, it was very historically inaccurate, so that turned me off as well.

Just finished "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn".
Now onto "Cheaper by the Dozen".

Before these I read the "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo/Played with Fire/Kicked the Hornet's Nest" trilogy. I watched the movies afterwards and the movies sucked because they left out so many important details which made the story great.

Just finished it last night actually

It was cathartic. I too suffered the loss of a daughter in 2000. It's taken until now to attempt this book. My girlfriend walked in at one point a few days ago, as I was reading in bed, sobbing. Just a blubbering sobbing mess. I didn't expect that kind of emotional response being so far removed from that event in my life. She was confused though ! She didn't know what the book was about haha. Almost had a date with the men in the white coats and the funny jacket.
