Empire- Orson Scott Card

"A disturbing look at a possible near future" or something like that, pretty good

Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite sci-fi authors of all time. I dig his Ender series.

What did you think of it?

I stopped reading after two-thirds of the book. I was just extremely annoyed by this guys complete lack of preparation/gear/etc. To me it read like one of the most elaborate suicides in the history of man. I like his concept, surviving in the wild, independence, etc, but the basic rules of eating plants that you don't know (hand-lip-mouth etc) could have saved his life.

I actually do want to read this book, and didn't know that he dies. Ah well, I'll still read it.

Finished it the other day...

Well, the book was okay. I was a bit annoyed at Chris, to me it seemed he was still in a teenage rebellion phase and always seemed to have a huge chip on his shoulder regarding society in general. Yet apparently he said that he wanted to get married and settle down later in life.

And yes, his huge lack of preparation and frankly his arrogance and lack of respect to the nature killed him. A simple little map could have saved his life in the end, but he was so set on being independent and living off the land.

What also bothered me was how incredibly selfish he was. Yes granted he had some issues with his parents, but not speaking to them for two years and keeping them completely in the dark was just mean (imho of course).

Started reading this today.

I'm currently re-reading the series in preparation for TtH, about halfway through The Bonehunters right now. Erikson is definitely one of my favourite fantasy authors ever.

I haven't read a book since...well...since I finished For Whom the Bell Tolls. I was embarrassed that I hadn't read it before then. I actually enjoy Hemingway quite a bit.
