Yeah, I got started with software and been doing it for about seven years. Just bought my first hardware synths. Brings a whole new outlook on the creative process.
Outside music and music related stuff (I'm the head of the sound department in my state's legislative assembly), I used to paint in my teens and I've always enjoyed cooking.
No, the trains are restoration projects. The G16 was originally made for the 1952 Alaska state fair. The Hurlbut 'steamer" was made in 1950 for the Last Frontier Hotel in las Vegas

I started out with Fl Studio 6.I dunno, I'm more of a Cubase kind of guy.
I'll be honest; I tried cubase, didn't make much sense to me. Reason.....I didn't think it was that reasonable. Ableton? My old PC wasn't even ABLE to run it! And reaper....gave it a shot, things weren't happening much.
Once I learned and got good (ok, I mean with just coming up with random stuff pointing and clicking away on piano roll/step sequencer), every other software just seemed slow and like I had to spell things out more than writing.
Besides, I'm all about the synths, baby!

I used to draw and write poetry. I still dabble a bit, but I've decided to focus my time on music. I've been collecting guitars, basses and old synthesizers. I still consider myself begginner level in all things musical, but I'm always making progress.
I enjoy the technical challenges of repairing my '90 Thunderbird and the broken synths I buy on eBay. I've got all kinds of plans for the T-bird, but I'm limited by time and money.
For whatever reason I don't get much satisfaction from cooking. I enjoy it on occassion, but I would rather just eat out.

Yeah, I started with FL too. FL is definitely easier. Feels more like a synth/sequencer in and of itself as opposed to a full blown production environment for any type of music you could ever want.
You know....people knock it every day for things it "can't do" because their drawers are in too much of a twist to handle adjusting to the features being in someplace they aren't used to.
It's going 64 anyhow lately, so that's maybe something to look forward to. I'm still stuck on the legacy pattern blocks.
I started making dumb youtube videos with my buddy about having band practice, but then it turned into us actually writing music. It's a good time.
