what bass is better for playing blues

There's a guy that plays bass in a local/regional blues band. He plays a full-size. He has a strap on it that is tied around the neck/body joint and around the spike on the bottom. He normally plays it as a stand-up, just like everybody. But, he often "wears" it and plays it like an electric bass.
He is something like 6' 7" tall....
I wish I had taken a picture of it that last time I saw him. I already had a caption in mind. "How a REAL man plays acoustic bass."

From a looks and old school tone perspective a Fender P or J.
I think part of it depends on what type of blues you are playing. Are we talking modern electric blues or Delta blues? for modern stuff I think you can get away with a wider variety of style and tone. Look at Jojo Garza from Los Lonely Boys. He lays it down with a very modern six string bass.
