AFAIK he played bass on Aretha's cover of Respect.

David J of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets. Very inventive, tasteful bass lines that, like Peter Hook, the songs are often built on.

Add Will Heggie to that group with Cocteau Twins until 1983, then (I believe) the guitarist Robin Guthrie did both guitar and bass recording, but based on this performance alone...

Definitely Stephan Gade. German bass player. Probably totally unknown outside Germany. Not flashy, but extremely tasteful. His work as musical director for the band of a man called Niels Frevert involves beyond the mentioned tasteful bass playing, very beautiful arrangements for all strings, horns, and lots of other instruments.

Oh, and Graham Maby, as others have noted. Maybe Andy Rourke and maybe Alex James.

Surprised nobody has mentioned a bass player you have all heard, but probably won't recognise the name:
Rutger Gunnarsson.

He was the bassist for ABBA.

Years ago I had to play along to a school choir doing an ABBA medley, and you think you know the tunes until you sit down with the sheet music. The way the bass modulates through the key changes is just extraordinary.

Download the music to ABBA's greatest hits and play along. It's not even my style of music, really, but it's astonishingly clever, some of it.

I would say Walter Becker is kind of a long stretch as far as primary bass players go. I relate him more to guitar rather than bass and anyways, after the first 2 or 3 albums it was studio musicians playing the bass parts on the albums.
