I could list several more contemporary players that are still rising in the ranks of recognition in the bass community, such as Angeline Saris, Nathan Navarro, Evan Marien, and more...
But one bassist I'm surprised isn't mentioned often at all on TalkBass (even among the metal crowd here) is Brian Krahe of the band Krosis. He is one of my favorite contemporary metal bassists. Not only is he a skilled technical bassist with a thunderous bone-rattling tone, but I love that he is a bespectacled dude who wears "normal" clothing and straps his bass high, like I do. He doesn't "look" metal but totally "is" metal. He's not afraid to just be himself and I like that.
