What did you learn today?


Getting some insights into the hope that's coursing through our veins — discovering for instance, among other things, that the AstraZenica vaccine is the long way 'round, the scenic route, on the same messenger RNA driven journey towards immunity. Cottoning on to the coordinates, the new, out-of-the-blue, legend :)
… Traditional vaccines, including some COVID-19 jabs, deliver antigens directly to the body.

But other COVID-19 vaccines, such as the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca jabs, use different technology.

Instead of delivering the antigen itself, the vaccines contain a genetic blueprint (or set of instructions) that tell the body to make the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein using the body's own cells.

To do this, the Pfizer and Moderna jabs contain a single strand of genetic material — that's the mRNA or messenger RNA — which is encapsulated in a protective fatty coating.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, on the other hand, contains double-stranded DNA, which is carried into the body via a weakened version of a common cold virus, engineered so it doesn't replicate.

As first order neurons, olfactory receptor cells can transport xenobiotics from the environment directly to the brain. That I wake up 45 times an hour.

I was told this is "bad".
Sleep study? I forget the threshold, but that is definitely in the "recommend CPAP" range, although I cannot say I was particularly fond of mine nor used it much. If you had a sleep study, then today I bet you learned how hard it is to clean that wax gunk that keeps the wires on your scalp. Hope all is well!

Yep, sleep study. CPAP in my immediate future. Moderate sleep apnea is 15 - 30. I always was something of an over-achiever.

A bittersweet awareness: after a while, the Oxford jabber, whose effect lasts longer, will be on a par with the initially more efficacious mNRA jabber.

Getting a little — Oxford karma — boost there ;) Good for the spirits :)

TIL that Northern European ancestry may leave you with a gene that causes hydromorphone to be entirely ineffective. It was actually a few days ago, but just put this together with my GP. With the opioid crisis in full swing, the looks you get from ER staff when you have zero reaction to a full dose of that in your thigh is unsettling. The more you know!

It’s a monster that has killed 5 of my first cousins, and my nephew, despite the fact that I gave him one of my kidneys.
