The internet has been around long enough now to actually have an "old school" period at this point.. Im talking mid/late 90s or so... what do you guys miss about the old school age of the net?

Id have to say...

Amateur Tripod or Geocities websites for celebrities, tv shows, movies, etc. I miss the lame backgrounds, the midi background music, the hyper links in comic sans font.

AOL chat rooms- Anyone in their mid 30s like me, who says they never prowled the chat rooms for girls is lying.... you know you all sent out mass amounts of PMs to poor unsuspecting girls that read, "ASL?".

Love@AOL- This was the WAY to meet chicks online in the 90s. You could browse singles in your area, and even see their photos! And this was before internet predators and craigslist murderers, so it was easy to get a girl to agree to meet you at the mall or Sonic Drive in!

losers.org- Not sure if this site is still active, but it was a site that archived personal websites created by the biggest "losers" online. They had a section for "dorks", "freaks", etc. Hilarious stuff.

mulletsgalore.com- anyone my age spent countless hours in college searching out mullets on this site!

AOL Instant Messenger- this was boss.

I was at Intel from 88 to 93, what I miss about the "Old school" internet was the clarity of pertinent information that engineers and other egghead types enjoyed without all of the children and psychoblabber that goes on today. The net now is an abomination of what it once was....

...and I wouldn't have it any other way!!! I LOVE IT!!!

I miss being disconnected from the internet every 2 hours. It gave you a sense of how time was passing .

Having to use download managers like "Get Right" for anything more than a couple Mb.

Playing a game online and being happy at having a ping of less than 400.

Man, the dial-up noises of course. And the first Half-Life. For a-six-year-old it was really something after all those 2D Marios, and Rambo games on crappy consoles. I think I would die if I had to use a 56.6k dial-up again, but at that time I had the patience of a buddhist monk. I had no trouble waiting hours for a brand new 2D skijumping game to download.

The first time using a broadband was something more of a brain malfunction: "Oh my god how does this happen so fast. I click this link and the page is there. *** I can't handle this"

I think you knew that when I said the internet started in the mid-late 90s, that I was referring to the time period where it became more mainstream, and families started using them in their homes.

The only guys online back in the 80s were "nerds" like my cousin Roy sitting up in his attic, typing on black screens and green letters to people in Sandusky Ohio. I think alot of them nerds got together for a convention at a Radioshack in Atlanta in the late 80s.

PSS-anytime you open something to the mainstream public, idiots will always enter the equation.

I miss 8" floppy disks, mono-chrome monitors, 20MB hard drives, 300baud modems and even 300baud serial dot-matrix printers!!! Punch cards! Elevated flooring and air-conditioned rooms with controlled access. Tape drives. Oh, wait. A lot of that was before the internet even.

$300 for a 1MB RAM upgrade!!! DOS. Hard drives mapped as A:.
