What does "beginner's bass" mean?

I recently purchased an unused but used starter pack "Stop dreaming, Start playing" from a dude on CL. They retail for $300 new. The pack includes a 15 watt Fender Rumble amp and a Squier Affinity Jazz. This is a beginner set as it has all you need to get started. Funny thing is it's not cheap in any way and the bass is of really good quality and the amp is a Fender. Beginner material yes, junk...NO!

The $89-$129 stuff on Amazon is most likely junk and I wouldn't want any one to begin on that stuff.

If you are a beginner, what else would your first bass be? :bassist:

If the person or parents of the person were asking me (which has happened when I used to teach), I'd say buy a used MIA Fender P-bass or J-bass, get it set up and then if Johnny or Nancy gets bored with it, it can be resold for what they paid. New anything is always a ripoff

Hey, guys!
Many times i've heard those words. But what does it mean? If my bass is made from alder (i mean it is a solid wood, not a 5-6 pieces of something), resonating good, has straight neck, strong tuners and decent pickups (trying EMG PJ, but didnt like. Now there is a costom set from luthier, with vintage specs and solid wire with a rag insulation)bilded with care to little things and detaills... What makes it "beginer's"? It is passive low cost Yamaha trbx174, but what is major difference with " big boys"?
Much like other music instruments, beginner means low cost, lower quality/cost materials, no custom options, and not hand assembled by a master craftsman.

agree. We have one big instruments selling company, they make video reviews of their stuff. And there is a guy on bass line - he push sound from anything. As an example this vid i will attach

He's probably using stock strings on the thing. Not often you see a budget bass with 70s pickup spacing.

It's not a bad sounding bass, but better strings would probably improve the sound even more. Nothing wrong with that instrument.

Rather than beginner it seems like entry level would be a better term. As stated before, a decent enough instrument to see if it's for you and your dad won't go nuts when you switch to skateboarding.

What someone's definition of that is, REALLY boils down to who is saying/insinuating it. I've had some basses labeled "Beginner basses" that were fantastic instruments. Ibanez SRX series was pretty much the same across the board, but lookie who was playing one (not taking about Gene, please forgive his playing lol)

Also sounds pretty sweet to be honest. Obviously a Starcaster bought from Wal-Mart will typically be regarded as a beginner bass, but it kinda rustles my jimmies when people call the Squier VM and CV, Ibanez SR and SRX, or Yamaha basses "Beginner Basses".

The guy played it for a couple of hours and couldn't get the hang of it, he Boxed it back up and never touched it again. Technically used but the bass had less play time than a show room model at a GC or other guitar store. It still had the sticker on the pickguard and the hang tags. The amp was the same way. Used but unused, unused but used. Point is it was brand new.
