What dog do you own?

These two blithering blockheads. My house is well lit if I come home at night because they set off the motion light as they get up barking and dancing at the gate when they hear me coming down the road. Couldn't ask for two more loyal little buddies.

APBT's are my breed of choice forever. My rescued male Connor is the single best working dog I have ever encountered. He's trained in Personal Protection, and we've dabbled in pretty much every dog sport out there.

I currently have four and a half dogs at my house...well maybe four and a quarter.

The oldest is Jazzy. She's a maybe beagle/sheltie, maybe jack russell/corgi mutt of some kind. She's smart and very clearly MY dog.

Then is Pixie, the fractional dog mentioned above. She's a long haired chihuahua. I tell people that she's a Toy Irish Setter. She's obviously my wife's dog. She's lived in the house I pay for for five or six years and still does the 'Intruder!' bark every time I get home.

Jaco is next. He's a full blooded Jack Russell terrier, but he doesn't look like one. He's considerably larger than is typical for that breed. He's probably about 50-55 lbs. He's Joni's dog.

Joni is the biggest of our dog's. She's a Lab-Pit-Boxer mix. She's about 90-95 lbs. She's very sweet, but LOOKS intimidating.

Bonnie isn't actually our dog. But she's living at our house. She is a retired show Beagle. She belongs to friend who lost their house and ended up somewhere they couldn't have beagles.

We also have 3 cats and a fish.

Well some things have changed since then. Bonnie went back to her owners. Then she ran away. She hasn't been seen for some time. I prefer to hope she has a new family. Her long-time life partner and fellow retired show Beagle, Rusty, who lived two doors down the street and so wasn't included in the previous count, has since passed away. But it was reasonable because he was older than most dirt.

And just last week or the one before, depending on what time you read this, we added another probable Corgi/Russell mix to the family. He's mostly white with an auburn saddle and mask. I wanted to name him after a musical hero of mine who turns out to be the brother of one of my wife's friends from school. But my wife prefers the name I had considered from two other musical heroes. So I call him Roscoe. And she calls him Buddy. He'll likely let us know which one he thinks is him.

When I was a kid, we had a setter that stayed outside for the most part. He wasn't ever house trained. Never played with him or anything. He was, hate to say it, kind of annoying. We only had him so my brother could take him hunting.

I've only owned Boxers as an adult. I've had 4...they don't have the longest lifespan unfortunately.

Renowned for being great with kids, but great guard dogs. Terrible hunters but the best buddy for playing.

We got Chance three years ago. We were looking for a puppy but the breeder referred us to one of her previous clients. He was with a family who had to let him go because they developed allergies. Very cool of the breeder if you ask me.

Worked out great for us. He was completely house trained and loved my kids.

Big bonus was that he's Level II Personal Protection trained. We didn't pursue continuing that training, but we had to learn how to handle him, especially around strangers.

Larger than most boxers (~95-100lbs), he was bred in Europe. I'm not a hunter...I got what I needed. A good guard dog to keep my family company when I'm away, "patrol" the house at night, bark at anyone who comes up the driveway. But, he's also perfect for playing catch outside with us, plus goofing off or cuddling with my kids.

Sorry no actual pic of my dog (net pic below), but I own a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon -- 82lbs of bird obsessed hunting dog that don't hunt, and don't shed either.

funny sidebar, I wake up one morning to hear what sounds like a bird in the house. Get up to see one flapping furiously at the window. I guess it came down the chimney during the storm in the early morning. And my bird obsessed dog? He brings me a toy to look at! So I catch the bird, open the deck slider, and let it go. THEN my dog gets all excited. Some hunting dog.

BTW, these dogs are like labs around the house, but get them outside and anything that moves catches their attention. They will instinctively point and stalk any animal (or, like last night, a stationary soccer ball!). They are generally very good around kids and other dogs. I never fear my dog will bite anyone, but I do fear if he gets off the leash his lack of car sense will get him killed. Although he has 'escaped' on three different occasions and been gone for 30 minutes, and hour, and 3.5 hours respectively in an urban environment, each time coming home on his own.

I'll have to post a couple pics another time, but we have an Olde English Bulldogge named Maximilian (it was the name the breeder had given him, and it just stuck). VERY intelligent, almost freakily so. He belches, snores, farts, drools, and can be quite stubborn at times. And we love him dearly, and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world.
