What driver to put in Rumble 115 cab?

None of my docs show a production BRX-115 with a round hole, they all show a variation of a slot port. I'm wary of photos on the internet because you don't really know the whole picture.

For example, I get a lot of inquires about Mesa Boogie speaker cabinets (not just bass but guitar too). It turns out than some are not legitimate Mesa builds but are home built (or in a couple of cases outside the US specifically counterfeit cabinets built as cosmetic copies complete with fake logos and hardware) or cobbled together out of damaged cabinet parts. The look pretty correct until you look closely at some of the hidden details. It's made even more complicated because we had a custom shop that would build a lot of one-off's that were later re-labeled as a production product by an end user.

Mmm. A bit of a can of worms. I don't have enough knowledge to have an opinion on whether this is a copy or not, but it is odd that the same ones are all over the world. Normally knock offs are inferior quality, this is well built, though l accept that the port design is strange. I'd like to get some utility out of it if l can at modest cost. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

You might find it odd, but I see odd things all the time that most folks would never consider, but I do this for a living so I have a deeper knowledge about many pieces of gear than most (I worked as a design and support engineer for Fender for about 6 years).

It's also possible that it was a prototype or sample cabinet that was dug out of the dumpster, that was happening for a while back in the day until they started crushing everything that was discarded (for this reason, but also to conserve dumpster space).

My BXR300C has a slot port, and I also am finding examples of 115s that look like my combo, but it looks like maybe Fender changed the design at some point.

Like I said earlier, it's possible but I don't have any documentation supporting it as a production product. It also possible that it was a very short production run because it didn't sell well (a lot of the Fender products of that era didn't do that well, nothing like the Rumble combos of today).

Just beware that there are a fair number of speaker cabinets being sold as something they are not, either because the seller doesn't know or the seller is being dishonest. Also, it was (and still is) popular to substitute cheap drivers in place of premium drivers in cabinets, especially common with JBL, EV and Mesa cabinets, so again buyer beware.

So, l have been wondering what to do here. I don't have any attachment to this cab but am reluctant to just dispose of something with potential use. Eminence 15LFA cab data sheet gives info for med vented which is basically the cab dims I've got, just need to add 4 circular 4" x 7.145 ports, cheap and easy to do. I can get this driver cheap too. This would get me a cab/driver that fits eminence guidance, meets power requirements etc. I guess this wouldn't be the best cab in the world but probably ok for someone starting out? I haven't decided one way or the other yet, please could you explain the downsides of doing this vs buying something modern? Please bear with me on this learning process! Thanks.

I suppose it depends on your long term thinking. If AH reckons the concept is sound then you get an adequate bass cab. However it's a complete bitsa, which means the resale value is minimal. So you add up the cost of the driver and ports, add a bit for grille or whatever may be needed, and compare that with the cost of a reasonable second hand cab on the local market. If you get a differential that's worth your time and effort, then consider whether you care about resale value. If you like the answers to both questions by all means go ahead.

Would one of you more knowledgeable guys mind checking something out for me?
I've been trying to use winisd and unibox, and have run the numbers that Eminence give for Delta 15LFA in med vented cab (driver l have and size of my cab). I get cone excursion past Xmax in both at 250W. Any thoughts why this might be, when the Eminence software says it is ok? I am new at this but usually pretty good at working things out, so to have two calculators giving consistent results that differ from manufacturer makes me want to double check before l start cutting ports. Thanks.

WinISD has a history of being inconsistent with other methods.

That said, it’s not uncommon for these drivers to be mechanically limited like that.

By any chance is the box data incorrect, or is the box model with the HPF being used?

Every driver will run out of Xmax at low frequencies if low enough,
