What ever happened to Stenback basses?

I have never owned a Fodera, so a direct comparison would be unfair.

I don't think that Tom is building basses any longer. I was lucky to obtain a fretless. I was curious that if he is not building basses then what might he be doing?

My understanding is that he very much is still building basses, but has closed order books and doesn't have his website anymore. My understanding is that if you want a bass from him, there's somewhat of an 'interview' process as he only builds a few a year. I asked Paul at Paul's Bass Matters in Netherlands (who somewhat acts as a 'dealer') what his wait list was as a 'dealer' and I was told about 10 years. How serious that was as an answer i'm not sure, but I think the point is that a LOT of people want them....and Tom's output is purposefully not particularly high.

There will be plenty who will get all salty about the above (and some of it might be 100% accurate, 2nd hand info and all, but if it works for Tom......then it works haha). Get in line.

I was told the same last summer by Paul @Bassmatters, the chance of buying a Stenback is virtually nil.

Tom brought a new bass to 2024 NAMM, and sold it in a matter of hours for $13,000. I was told by a very reliable source that he makes them periodically but not often. He works for a high end speaker maker. I hope that he gets bored of what he is doing and returns to making basses. They truly are remarkable instruments.

You have to play one to believe it! It really is all that! I tried a buddy's. Acoustically every note resonated in the body like i have never felt before, and I'm super skeptical!

Very old comment but for me, the best makers do this very well.

No affiliation, but Paul @Bassmatters has a used Stenback 4 string for sale right now. Priced at €9.500 it's not cheap but for a Stenback it probably is.
