What Happened to Prog Rock?!?!

I don't know if these guys have been mentioned, but there is an unsigned (last I checked) band called Braintoy that is pretty prog and really good. Here's an interesting live take on Pink Floyd's "Sheep" to check out for starters:

Big second, third, fourth on Porcupine Tree. Although Steve tends to be a bit melancholic in his writing, his drummer is a monster. But Gavin only appears on albums from 2002 on. I'd actually say start with In Absentia rather than Lightbulb Sun. though.

I'd say start with "Signify" or "Stupid Dream". Gavin Harrison is a monster but Porcupine Tree is about exquisite song writing rather than drum pyrotechnics. Just listen to the reissue of "Up the Downstair" in which Gavin re-recorded all of the drum parts.


What's wrong with labeling Tool a progressive rock band? To me they are the modern iteration of King Crimson.

If you want to check out where prog is these days google "progressive rock internet radio stations" and tune in Morow.com, Prog.fm, and Delicious Agony. "Music Lab" when it was on XM Radio was my favorite channel. Even though you had to listen to Yes, Frank Zappa and Dream Theater at least one every hour that left 18 minutes for new music to be heard.

I would always say they are far more fusion than true prog. Tough that is because 'prog' for me is the mostly UK-centric music of supergroups like Yes, ELP etc... from roughly 1969 to 1975.

However ontop of that I don't think ELP ever gelled especially well as a group. Most of there music sounds like Emerson improvising with the rest of the band trying to keep up. I've also heard a few live recordings where Greg Lake's bass is out of tune and his singing is also pretty rough at times.... so ELP are hardly untouchable.

Hmmm when I think prog I do think 70s stuff -- Yes, Genesis, ELP, etc. This thread has given me a list of bands to go learn about, at least. But honestly, most of what I hear being called "prog" these days just seems like pretentious metal. Get those damn kids off my lawn!

here in brooklyn there's La Otracina who started out pretty psychedelic proggy but are now leaning towards the metal side of prog....drummer driven

I'm surprised it took until page 5 to mention Dream Theater. Also, a lot of late 60's and 70's bands seem to be missing including to a limited degree, Golden Earring, and also Sugarloaf and Iron Butterfly, Rhinocerous, ...

I would also have to classify some of the Flektones material as Prog Rock.

That's because DT is prog just for the sake of being prog. IMHO, they are too pretentious and their music is, sometimes,
pure and unnecessary wankery. I like them, though.

I would say you should look at Circus Maximus, Pagan's Mind, Riverside, Spheric Universe Experience to name a few.

Then of course there is still Rush, Dream Theater, and who knows when and where King Crimson will appear again.
