I think we have 2 big trends in prog rock today... one is the "testing out the borders" stuff, getting more intricate and/or extreme. The other trend tries to emulate the heroes from the late 60s/70s.
Both are valid IMO, though the last one may only be called progressive because of the sound...
Actually, I would opine that while the first may be rightly called "progressive" the latter should be called "Prog" ...i.e., it's a genre name, not a descriptive adjective.
