I think they eventually just get thrown away.
I have often wondered what happened to all of those thousands and thousands of Charvel, Cort, Aria Pro II, Kramer, pointy Carvin etc. basses that you couldn't get away from in the 80s and 90s. They all had to go SOMEWHERE. My guess is the garbage.

My guess is that they are largely forgotten and rotting away in garages, attics, barns, and basements.
I understand the $50 from the 60's &70's making the trash, but since the 90's even the budget guitars are playable.
In the next 10-20 years they will resurface as the bass players' parents houses are cleaned out when they pass away or move to retirement homes.
I bought a ton of the Kramer guitars when grunge hit and they fell out of favor. Literally for pennies on the dollar, I have some high end beauties.
They are ground up into a fine powder which is then snorted by the Mothman bass.
I think A lot of them become wall art. My very first bass now hangs in my dad’s music room. It’s in very sad (unplayable) shape but it looks cool so there is that
Seems most of them were sold and sent to Japan, only to be placed back on the market with inflated prices to be sold to those of us reliving our pasts and grabbing the guitars once again.

Hanging up at Red Robin or similar restaurants. Screwed to the wall with drywall screws.

That's nasty.... but my first bass spent 30 years under a bed in the guest room while I pretended I never played the thing...
But to answer the question: they're 'aging in'
I think people hoard them for various reasons. Dealers, collectors, people with disposable income buying things they could not afford in their youth. I'm guilty of it. A search online will reveal at least one person or a group who are into pretty much anything you can think of. Washing machines, obscure 2 stroke European cars even pointy basses. No matter your fetish, you can find that which you covet far more easily in 2019, markets have opened up, and everything is worth something to someone.
