Fascinating. I wasn't aware that tune that's normally played today was the chorus of the original recording, leaving out the original verses.

Dude... it's a whole thing.

Many of the older standards, show tunes, etc... appeared in Broadway shows (or the like) and there was a whole verse for the character to build up to the big (memorable) tune.

Old seminal vinyl recordings (found on youtube) usually have a syrupy/maudlin verse before "the tune" starts.

As noted above, many of these verses are in the Chuck Sher series "New Real Book" volumes.

edit: I've also heard some sax players (at jam sessions, etc) start with the arcane verse as a solo opener, and all the NYC cats (in the know) come right in when the chorus starts. Next level tune-memorization.

What you mean "vinyl"? Them's SHELLAC!

There are some tunes: "Someone to Watch Over Me"; "Somewhere over the Rainbow"; "My Funny Valentine"; have quite lengthy verses, that may have two or more stanzas of their own before launching into the chorus.
