It would really stink to have to goto a single bass. I would have to find a way to keep 2 and it would be the Blue AP-5 and the EHB1005MS. The AP-5 is so comfortable to play and will cover any genre. The EHB1005MS with the Big rigs is like having a 7lb double P with the smoothest fastest neck I've ever touched.
Now gun to my head pick is the ibanez. Active 3 band with mid sweep and a passive tone control. The weight, playability, and tonal range puts it on top.

If I were still gigging, that would be my old No. 1 bass (Carvin LB70 with Aeros) plus a second bass to use as a backup or when the No. 1 is out for repairs, etc. That second slot would be a close race between my Zon VB-4 (lighter weight, better playability, more similar to my No. 1 for gigs) and Kiesel Osiris fiver (more versatile, more fun).

If I were "retired" from gigging, my second choice would probably either be the Kiesel Osiris or my parts p-bass for more variety.

My Lakland 44-01. Has Nordstrand Big Single pups and a custom Audere 4 band pre in it with 6 mode Z switch. Very versatile pre with many tonal options just using the Z mode switch without even touching the EQ. A fellow TBer played it on a gig and made me promise to give him first crack at it if I ever sell it. This is a keeper that must not be sold or flipped.

I wrestle with this all the time. I have donated most of the basses I’ve owned, including every commercially made one. I only have instruments I’ve built. Somehow, I know what I like in an instrument better than anyone at any bass company.

My Hammersmith 5. All passive. Volume, tone, 3-way selector for neck/both/bridge and 3-way selector for single (inner coil)/series/parallel for the dual coil bridge pickup. Those pickups and that Mesa TT800 are a versatile, deadly combination. If I had to I could play this bass alone. (Apologies for the blurry pic.)
