What is the absolute bare minimum you can get by with ?

My bare minimum is a good amp modeler. I'm using a Helix LT but I could use a stomp if necessary. The bass is secondary to that. I could use the cheapest bass possible if I had to.
I could get by with my Warmoth/Fender parts P bass (more because I’ve found I’m NOT a J bass guy, and all the others were non-essential) through a Markbass CMD-121P (because it’s loud enough to play with anyone).
Note that I actually almost always get by with my Markbass Micromark 45W 1x8 combo amp because I play most of my gigs with acoustic guitars and no full drum kits.

I've had this bass for nearly 50 years. It's not my favorite, but It would be tough for me to sell.
Reality is that if I was cleaning house for cash, It would have to go and I'd hang on to my favorite foundation. A 1st gen sunburst.

I've often thought about this. My Wilkins p/j 4, Pandora PX4B and a set of headphones and I am good.
Of course that covers the Bass base. I'd have to do the with my non bass guitars as well.

Last to go would be:
- Plywood DB
- MIM P bass (ironically also my cheapest bass)
- Mesa TT800 and 215 (although if I had to downsize, I could get by with a D800 and 115)
If we are including non-bass gear too, it gets a little more complicated.

Me too! For a while I pined for burst, but I’ve grown to appreciate the less common color. It’s Metallic Blue, but I can really only see the “metallic” in the sun.
I have never had any real emotional connection to any of my gear in over 30 years, everything is replaceable.
My 28.6" scale Ibanez GSRM20 neck + GSRM20B body Mikro Bass, equipped with just an EMG Geezer Butler P pickup, and various other mods performed on it, which has been my main bass for the last past 10 years or so, and the one bass I ever bonded most to.
I even gave it a name, though I usually don't give my instruments names, "Dud Bottomfeeder".
This is how it looks currently :
Though I ponder on getting rid of the red and green electrical tape used for decorating it, and instead install gold plated monorail bridge pieces with a string spacing of 17.5mm (compared to the current standard 19mm), as well as gold knobs.

Having stainless steel frets installed in the fretboard, or perhaps even having a whole new custom neck made for it, will also most likely happen sooner or later as well.

My '83 Washburn. I bought her second-hand in 1989 and she was my first "proper" bass and we still gig together 32 years on. She's got a twist in the neck, questionable intonation and some interesting electronics, so literally every other bass in my collection is technically better* but, well, you know? Pretty sure I don't have to explain why here.

Or in my case twenty years ago, what had to go to keep supporting the wife and kid - let's just say a lot.
The Sadowsky P5 in my avatar. Love my collection and could never realistically pick just one, but if I had to, it would be that one.
I have ten basses...five are untouchable.

Interestingly, I'm going to sell at least 3 of 5 basses. And maybe the 4th. What I will be keeping for sure is my 60th anniversary Jazz. It's what I play the most. So that would be it. I have another bass on the way, but it won't be here until sometime in November. We'll see if it displaces the Jazz.
