I'd vote string crossings. You could feasibly come up with some functional single string fingering involving the thumb but for the hassle that it'd be you could also just work on your string crossings as that's going to be a far more universal skill--the passage is perfectly doable across the strings. Looks very similar to one of the excerpts from Mozart 40 in the first movement. That one is always done across the strings as far as I've seen.

If you didn't use your thumb but did on one string you'd end up pivoting for every note which would, for me, tend to drag and have a much higher chance of just generally sucking where coordination between the two hands and pitch accuracy is concerned.

No, it would stick out like a sore thumb! Second half of bar 1, I'd play it with 2 on the D string, second half of bar 2 I'd probably go for 1

The most difficult thing there is the leap from the low G to the high note of the arpeggios. I'd suggest always landing on a first finger G to keep the distance short. You're in octaves with the cellos there. That's an open string for them, so ya gotta keep up.

Well, when playing this it is the first bars of J and K that are the big issues, particularly if you want to produce with quality, time and good pitch. The arpeggios are easy and not very fast.

Sure, but Eric is going for sound and a good string crossing therefore trading a right hand problem over to the left hand. His is my preference IF you can guarantee perfect intonation and avoid a slurp.
