What is YOUR personal limit?

I have owned over 100 basses in the last 40 years. I will only buy a bass that I can sell for more than I paid for it. That way, owning any bass, costs you nothing. I have no limits.

This is a pretty good method. I try and do the same with stocks so I can buy said basses that cost me less than nothing.

Thats a good idea, but don't let the whiners around the TB classifieds find out about it. They expect you to take a loss. :rollno:
or at least break even:rolleyes: But profit is a dirty word to them:(

I've got 4 basses right now. The 2 most expensive basses I've owned are 2 of them. My Spector Forte5 and my Modulus Quantum 5 were both in the $2500 range(Oops! I forgot about the USA MTD I had...it was about $2800!). I'm toying with the idea of a Status Stealth, which at the current exchange rate, would be, roughly, $3500! That would probably be my max! Although I'd drop $7k on a Zon TJ5 or $10k on a new Modulus TBX if I had the cash...;)

Well, it depends.

My most expensive bass that I own today cost me $1650 used, in part because it was a particular piece that I have long wanted and in part because the one thing it does, it does very well.

So I'm willing to pay good money for a bass that will give me what I want for a particular job... But unless my circumstances change, I think that $1500 is right about my limit, no matter what I do. If I sell one of my basses and opt to replace it, $1500 is about as much as I can imagine spending new or used. I just don't make so much money that I can budget more.

I would say 5K would be the limit for me. My personal thought is alot of times you pay for fancy tops and they don't necessarily make the bass sound or play any better. I would rather save the money and get a basic standard color and save some $$$. That being said, Ever since I owned an MTD and a U.S. Lakland, its tough to find anything I like for under 2K. Right now I have a Dingwall ABZ and I like it better than both the MTD and Lakland.

Don't ya just love it:)
I have sold off my expensive basses and I'm having a custom built with the proceeds. It won't cost as much as a MTD or Ken Smith But I'm looking for specific things that I just cant afford to get with the big name boys. Since everybody's playing Smiths, MTD's and Sadowsky's, I would love to have a bass that out performs them for a fraction of the cost. It's hard to do, but can be done:)

I play for myself, I guess as a "hobby" though after 20 years that just doesn't sound like *only* a hobby. Point is, I don't do gigs and I'm not in a band...but I don't want crap either. For a bass my personal limit is 500 dollars. Do super expensive Fenders sound better than a 300 dollar Squier? Sure...but not by much. Not enough to make me shell out four times the price for something that will only the see the inside of my house.
