What kind of case do you use?

I mostly play locally and I’m often traveling by subway so a gig bag has been the norm for me since the late 80s. I’ve come to really like all the extra storage that a gig bag provides via pockets, too.

I used to prefer hard shell cases if I was traveling by car but since I bought a really heavy duty bag (almost 20 years ago) I feel the instrument has enough protection in the gig bag. All my hard cases are in storage.

I only play at church so local. I have all semi-hard cases. I voted gig bag as that was closest.

My main carry is a mono vertigo M80. It basically does everything perfect for me and checks all the boxes, other than price. I got it used for $80 and I don’t know that I would own it if I had buy it at full price new.

I also have an SKB molded hardshell case that I picked up used for 60 bucks. I have never used it, But I like having it just in case.

I have a Sterling by music Man gigbag that is more of a gig taco, but I don’t really like it. The padding is decent, but the straps are probably the worst I’ve ever seen and make transporting it awkward and uncomfortable.

I also ordered a Fender FB620 last night. $59, free shipping, no tax. The reviews seem to be great, and it has 20 mm padding just like the gator transit bag that costs over twice as much. I’m hoping that this bag performs well when I need to bring a second bass to a gig. There are also some venues where I’m more worried about my mono vertigo being stolen while I’m on stage, so the cheap Fender bag will be my main bag at those places.

Gig bags. I used cases for years when I played out, but since I'm just a weekend jammer now gig bags are much easier to deal with.

I use a Mono Duo for every single time I play. Even if I'm just doing three songs at church I bring the Duo with two basses. It has held up very well for the past 5 or 6 years. Looks almost new. Basses well protected.

I only play locally and I use gig bags.

I have a few different singles but mostly use an Access Stage 5. Expensive, but the best bag I’ve ever used. I use that for rehearsals, basement jams, or any other occasion where I don’t take a spare bass.

I always take two basses to gigs and use a Gator Pro Go Double. It’s a pretty heavily padded bag, with emphasis on the heavy. It’s a pretty heavy gig bag, but I can deal with that. My only issue with it is that the two bass compartments seem kind of shallow. My typical gig basses are two Stingrays, an L-2500, and a Jazz, nothing unusual, but it’s kind of tough to close the bag with the two basses in it.

I have a Reunion Blues Continental Voyager single that’s also a very nice bag. If I ever replace that Gator, I’ll likely try a Continental Voyager double next.

I use an ABG with a floating bridge, so when I was gigging I'd use the hard case. The case is similar in size to a full size cello case.
If I'm invited to sit in for a few tunes at a friends session, I'll bring a slab in a bag.

I was an avid Mono Dual bass gig bag user, but switched to the Gator. The Gator is longer, so it fits my Thunderbirds.

No longer gigging, but I always greatly preferred hard cases and hated it when I started having to use gig bags for some very non standard basses. I got over it eventually though.

You don't have to succumb to anything but your own comfort level.

I carried hard cases for years, but eventually decided gig bags were easier and protective enough for the way I pack my gear. The fact that a majority does things different from you shouldn't make you uncomfortable. We all have our own reasons for doing things our own way.

…one of my nightmares. Luckily for me, only in my dreams. You have my sympathy! Moral of the story? Use a gig bag!

I once forgot my bass en route to a rehearsal. Decided it was the world telling me to buy the Squier VM fretless Jazz I'd been lusting after... I tell you, first time playing a fretless shouldn't happen at a rehearsal.

For me, I prefer a hardcase, however it's not always practical nor as conveniant, and my 46 year old OHSC is getting close to being on its last legs, so I only really take it on the road when we're in the van.

I scored one of these for £50 a few years ago and it has been brilliant. Still looks new although it seems some stitching is coming loose around the top of one of the strap clasps: Invalid Link Removed
