Benefits of playing fingerstyle? - Rounder tone, more control of dynamics, much faster passages and string crossing (in my experience).

It took me 30 years to get around to using a pick. I'm glad I finally did learn, even though I still prefer the direct connection to the strings offered by fingerstyle.
Learn both techniques (fingerstyle and pick) so you have more options to work with.

I use V-Picks. Freakishly Large Pointed, 2.77 thick acrylic. They are awesome pics and he's a member on here actually.


They are hand made and I guess considered boutique as they are $4 or so dollars each for the ones I use, but man do they last and are really, really comfy.

I started out fingerstyle and all was going well until The Cars became the rage. Those straight-eight patterns didn't sound too good with fingers.

I tried several different picks over several years and finally settled on Clayton .80mm acetyl.

both fingers and pick, about 50/50. I keep the pick in my palm while playing finger style, then will use a pick for certain parts or passages. So I use both at the same time.

I use these metal picks that are roughly .75 and have a zillion holes in them. I bought two dozen of them about 20 years ago, and have about half-a-dozen left. Can't tell you what they are, since the name wore off forever ago. I really do need to find some more...they give nice crispy harmonics!

Curious- do you know if the D'Andrea 1.14mms are heavier than the Fender Triangles in heavy? I find that the large triangle style picks work best for bass.

About 80% fingerstyle/20% pickstyle. As for the guage of picks, I've resently discovered that the Dunlop Tortex 1.14 "Purples" heavy picks aren't always the best - when playing really fast picking, a thinner pick (.72 "Yellows") actually have the flexability that the heavier ones doesn't and thus allow faster picking with less arm strain (I generate most of my picking force a la Newstead from the shoulder and not the wrist).

I also use even thinner (.60 "Oranges") on my 10-string as it allows striking both the fundimental and octave strings cleaner, as well and thumbpicks for songs that call for both pickstyle as well as fingerstyle.
