What kind of strings do you use?

I use TIJ flats on everything, guitars and basses. I've liked other strings (black tape, numerous flats and rounds particularly Ken Smith Burners) , but two sets have been cut off immediately after putting them on, TI jazz rounds and Elixers. I've never liked any set of Elixers on any instrument.
Yeah, I'm usually a D'Addario or a Rotosound guy but those Elixrs that were on the P when I bought it were pretty good. And they were already 2 years old when I bought it. I've been playing it now for 6 months tri weekly plus practicing and they are just now starting to get a bit dull. I just ordered a couple sets of rotosound standard guage haven't tried those on the P bass so we'll see....
Right now, Dunlop Nickels 45-100, best nickel roundwounds I've tried so far, Don't die as fast as Ernie Balls and don't got the zingy sound from when you put on new D'Addario strings. I've also tried Warwick and Rotosound steel strings, steel is not really my thing I guess.

I find that the deep, thumpy flat tone is completely lost in much of the music I play.

I use Carvin flats (made by LaBella) on both my fours, my five and my six. Doubt that I'll go back to rounds, ever. Flats give me the sound I'm looking for, along with being easy on the fingers and the frets -- plus they last practically forever with a little common sense TLC.
Agreed. For just about every style of music I play, flats are the way to go. Long lasting, and easy on the fingers. For those who think they'll miss the "growl", dig in with your plucking hand near the bridge and you'll find some. It's in there.
Have you tried S.I.T.'s Power Wound Nickel Strings? They seem to last longer than Dunlop's for me. I have a Custom Shop Fender P 5 string. They really bite into the mix!

I have D'Addario Chromes (flats) on my Fender MIA Jazz and P Bass four stringers. Recently, I installed a set of La Bella Slappers (nickels) on my Lakland 55-60 (five string), and now I'm thinking about putting them on those two Fenders . . . I love the sound that they produce on my Lakland. It took a week to get used to that zing of roundwounds, but with proper EQ'ing to tone them down . . . they ended up sounding amazing.
So I signed up for the free Elixr trial and got them yesterday. It's a cool deal. They send you a set, they ask you to put them on immediately and play them and keep a log as to how many hours a day you play them for the first week, then do a survey, then keep track for 8 weeks, do another survey, take them off send them back (they include the SASE) and they send you a voucher for a free set from some on-line company. Pretty cool. Anyway, I put them on yesterday, played about an hour on them then played worship this morning. I gotta say, My MIM P-Bass sounds fantastic with these strings. I roll the tone off about 1/3 and use a Sansamp set in an Ampeg set up... Fantastic. These things sound great, feel good and stay in tune! I have read many negative reports here about Elixrs but I gotta say, I love 'em. They are great and if I keep getting these results when I get my new set in a couple months, the Rotos I bought for my P may go to waste, or get put up for sale because I love these things...
