Been semi-pro most of my life, dipping my toe into the pool of pros.
Can finally call myself a pro. Still working my day job cuz it's flexible and I like it, but if I lost it for some reason I'd be fine.

Most of the people I play with (some of them 'pros'- but only in the sense that they make money playing and went to music school) in my medium-sized college town think I'm pretty good at the couple types of stuff I do well, and I don't really know anyone who won't play with me or doesn't have a good time when they do. That said, I very rarely make money doing it, and even more rarely make more than I spend on food, gas, and beers on gig night.
I have an excellent time, though (nothing makes me feel as good as playing music and sounding good), and I make more than enough money at work to keep me afloat, so I don't care. Oh, and it's true- Smoke on the Water's actually a pretty damn tasty groove, shame everyone in the developed world is sick of it.

Hear, hear! And they're getting better at a dramatically faster rate than I am.

Pro. I haven't had a day job in about 20 years since I got out of college.
Semipro, but I play with pros. These days I play only medium (200+) and sometimes big stage (1000+) couple of times a month.
Family and day job take too much of my time to play more often, and that's OK by me.

what about the category: retired? i'm retired, but still playing! and having a lot of fun! if i had known retirement would be this rewarding, as a musician, i would have retired at age 16!
i've had several professions. one of them was music/playing. i made a living from playing, twice in my life, for a total of 30+ years. toured, famous people, yada yada. big whup. it's not what most folks think it is. it's much harder work than the average person's "glam fantasy" of the professional musician.

What about "Retired and miserable as sin"?
Not if you continue buying and selling gear in that time. It is like adding a quarter to the game over before the time runs out, you will continue at the same level.
