I think there needs to be a level between these two. I gig around a dozen times a year but would do more if I didn't live in a tiny country town with very few musicians and even less gig paying venues.
The problem some players have with Smoke on the Water is that they don't take it seriously. They roll their own eyes when they play it, almost like they're embarrassed to be playing something many of us learned when we were 15.
You can't phone it in. You have to sell it and play it like you mean it. Yes it's simple and yes it's easy, but it's a great song with a great groove. Play it well, and your audience will love it.
Honestly the poll is flawed... there should be two polls: one for "what's your skill level" and another for "how much do you gig."
