What makes your band unique?

There's no other bands(in town) that sound like us. That's a big help.

We go from "heavy" sections to "soft" section several times in every song. They are all very long (5-10 minutes easy), we also change tempo and time signature a lot. And 3/4 is "our" 4/4 really.

Although that could pretty much describe any prog band in the world, it helps that there's only punk and black metal bands here in town.
(not to say I don't think we're kind of special) ;)

FaulkERsj - i totally agree. i don't have as much experience as you, but i've usually ended up in projects that were a bit different. and i love trying new things, but even at the smaller level it's hard to find shows with other bands that will draw a crowd that will enjoy your stuff if you're too..... weird... or different.

lol, and you're right...... SOMEbody's gotta do it first!

FaulkERsj, both of these things are really interesting to me as well. You want to stand out but not be TOO different because someone might not want to take a chance. My band has been together as is now for about 7 years and we struggle with finding venues that support original music. We don't play songs a lot of people know besides our small following

thanks Blippy Dubby! yeah, it's been a blast doing this project. we were working with a live drummer for awhile, and we're thinking about trying to find somebody new. but we've done gigs for about 5 months with just me and my bandmate, and its kinda..... pure awesome to only have 2 people to schedule, 2 people to coordinate..... good stuff.

is there a link to your stuff? i love checking out what TB'er's are into.

I don't really think my band has its 'sound' yet. But we're getting there. Sounding like a mix between Progressive Death Metal, Hardcore Punk and old school Thrash. An odd mixture, but I wouldn't say we sound like any other band I've listened to. Maybe you guys can help me by suggesting a few bands we may sound like? Link Removed

huh. very interesting. the Gray Daisy stuff is not really the kind of music i usually dig on. but it's really well done. nice!

lol.... i like the "... Gray Daisy's music is guitar driven, at times whimsical and ..." part of the bio. we don't use any guitars at all, so every time my bandmate is doing interviews or hyping us that's something that gets stressed. "nope, no guitar. that's bass.". i'm the introverted agoraphobic shut-in. gets me out of having to talk to peoples that much.

i like the stuff on soundclick better. it's more in line with what i find musically interesting. and that's a NICE tone on Beautiful World.

Thanks yeah, I'm trying to push the band in a little more creative direction. That's why i started this thread to try to see what elements other folks think make their sound "their sound". Our singer is a good acoustic player but really likes electric but when there are two electrics it's too much so I'm trying to convince him to play more acoustic "electric style" which is pretty cool sounding.

Anyway I just uploaded a new version of Beautiful World that is getting closer to my original thinking on the song. I'm a remixing whore, it's never done.

I don't know if what we do is unique but I do know what makes us stand out from other bands in our area....and thats the performance. Each gig is a performance...not just a live jukebox. We strive to be fun to watch and I think that sets us apart from most of the other bands who are doing the same sort of material.

our guitarist and keyboardist are only 16 and (in my eyes) are ridiculous child prodigies. i say this cause the guitarist plays better then the majority of major artists that I've heard (among other music related talents), and the keyboardist cant read music but can learn an entire Jordan Rudess keyboard part by ear in a few hours. plus, in our writing process, we let each other do our own things stylistically so give each person free expression of their playing style but retaining the overall concept of the song.

That tune FisherKing really stands out. Sounds a bit like Dinosaur JR in a good way. The singer has this cool way of almost being out of key, but just enough to be really edgy and interesting. I like the bass playing a lot too.

We are a 6 piece country, blues, and southern rock band. 2 guitars, bass, drums, mandolin, and steel guitar. We have 4 people singing harmonies on most songs. We do about half original and half covers. Our lead guitarist has a metal background and puts an amazing touch soloing to the country tunes. We have a mandolin player who plays a solid body, 4 string mandolin thru a cry baby wah. Adds a cool touch to the rock songs. His work on the banjo is awesome as well. Throw in the comedy that we put in between songs, it all works really well.

I've thought a lot about this - I'd say use of dynamics, blending melody with intensity, two vocalists with the same range but different styles of singing. Sweet guitar tones, riffs that are very well thought out and just creative as hell to begin with, and solos that sing with a ZZ Top meets Metallica kinda feel (that last one was from a local eZine guy).
