I am a new bass player, lifelong drummer. I've been playing electric bass about 6 months and following TalkBass throughout. I am trying to figure out what matters most in a bass. From what I've gathered, the wood is minor, the pick ups are psychological, the strings impact playing preference more than sound and the size of the speaker does not correlate to sound frequency. I got mid range basses to begin with (import Lakland, Maruszczyk, vintage Czech Spector) and never really played the economy models. I have found with other instruments, better made instruments tune more accurately and stay in tune. I wanted deep and defined tone with warm, mellow attack (funk, reggae, blues). I was gonna change my bass, then my pick ups and then I thought maybe thicker flatwound strings. But it seems what matters most is what I do with my fingers? (That's what she said).
So does a short handled shotgun pistol; at least according John Lee and Freddie.
Pickups and strings are the only things that impact your tone on your bass. Besides you, of course.I am a new bass player, lifelong drummer. Preaching to the choir.that’s why I own multiples of each.
2 is 1, 1 is none.
What matters is, if you have an opinion about what does or does not affect tone, such as tonewoods / hi mass bridges / pickups etc., and someone states a contrary notion here, be sure to jump down their throat with authority and righteous indignation, regardless of whether you actually know what you're talking about or not.
That's what I've learned observing this forum.
