What Mic are you using on your Cab.

here's a some of the mics in my arsenal that i've tried (besides a bunch of SM57's & SM58's) and all of them sound pretty good mic'ing a bass cab in the studio:

johnk, you have a brilliant mic locker. Coles 4038's are one of my favorite mics ever as well as the ubiquitous Royer. And the Coles are heavy enough to use as freeweights so you can cancel your gym membership and buy more!

thanks. yeah i love the Coles too. i pretty much always buy my mics in matched pairs just in case i want to miuc something in stereo, so i have at least two of all of the mics shown above, with the exception of the Lawson and the Geffel. and yes, the Coles require a heavy duty boom stand, otherwise you'll be picking them up off of the floor.

The OP asked about the Sennheiser e609. These seem pretty reasonably priced. I'm thinking of going this way myself. Anyone have experience with the 609?...
Yes . . . I use one on my "dirty" cab, both live and recording . . . it's pretty mid-rangey . . . NOT a lot of low end . . .

FWIW, on the "clean" cab I like to use an EV RE-20 . . .

AFAIK the EV PL-20 is the same mic as the EV RE-20 . . . . . .

no clue, trev. never used an m201, only the m88. i wouldn't call it love for the m88, though i did like it. wouldn't buy one, but i'd use it again if a soundman wanted to.

cool, just curious. seen a few folks in this thread espouse the virtues of the M88, but i'm the only fool loving the M201. that said, i've never used the M88, so maybe i don't know... :hmm:

I just picked up a Heil PR40, mostly because of Jimmy's praise, but also after a fair amount of research. I've usually used an RE20 when I've been in the studio so I wanted to pick up my own for live use/future studio time/home recording and I've dug it so far.

you, sir, are a man among men! that puppy never fails to deliver. most soundmen tell me they just plug me in, highpass it a little, and leave it flat, and it always works great. the times my foh sound is closest to my rig, that's the mic i'm using.

Just played a show last night and to my surprise the FOH guys were actually micing the bass cabs. They used a d112 (akg) and it sounded ok but It was very "boomy" so I opted just for my DI. I bought a beta 52 on a whim and it's ok but you still get the boomy sound (not alot of mids at all)

As jimmyM has said:
Heil pr40
Ev re20
Combination of sm57 and DI

I was really pleased with the sound of an EV RE-20 on my cabinet when I was recording this past summer.

+1.
i agree. RE20's are great for micing bass cabs, live or in the studio. IMO, they're great sounding non condensor mics for micing just about anything else too. i have a pair of those too. here's a pic of one of them for those that aren't familiar of how they look:
