What? No more GHS Bassics?? WTH!

Well then, I guess I played my last set of Bassics about a month ago when I took the last set (44, 63, 84, 106) off my last 4 string that actually *didn't* have my string of choice: Dunlop SB Nickels 45,65,85,105. I play my own material, everything in D Standard tuning. The Dunlops have totally spoiled me with what and how I play. Nothing else like them in my many years of playing. Ymmv...

If they're the same Boomers without the silk, it shouldn't affect the tension numbers.

From what I can gather, they're just the same Boomers but without the silk.

Sorry about the Bassics and Progressives, but I can get behind bass Boomers without silk. I love my bizarro B0–B2 bass-itone bass vi thing, but I don’t love this look I’ve got going (skinnier four are guitar Boomers).

This makes sense. As far as I know, the Roto Bass uses the same construction as the Bassics in that inner layers are stainless steel with only the final cover being nickel-plated steel.

I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but I've been quite happy with the Roto Ultramags.

According to the info I just obtained from Matt at Strings By Mail, the 4-string set of the new "Solidwound Bass Boomer" will be listed for $24, which is only $4 less than the regular Boomer but $6 more than the Bassics ($18). Meanwhile, the SIT Power Wound Nickels are listed for $18.

I guess I'll be ordering more of the PWNs going forward. In terms of tonal character, they sit right in between the Bassics and the Boomers. I would recommend them to anyone who's looking for a high quality all-purpose nickel rounds at an attractive price.

Yup. I particularly like the gauges, 40-58-80-102. Nicely balanced both in tone and feel.

Actually the main reason I wanted to stock up on the Bassics is I've been using them as a decent-quality but still affordable all-purpose string to help set up basses for the young upcoming talents within my church family. I also help a few of my fellow bassists with regular maintenance on their instruments.

Good news: I emailed GHS to ask about this a few days ago, and got this response just now:

"Yes, we are still selling them. We updated our site and they got removed. They are back up there. Thank you for reaching out to us on this."

I don't see them up on the GHS website yet, so maybe that update still hasn't gone through, but it sounds like they will continue to be available.

And here's hoping that, with the price of most everything going up, GHS Bassics will see a new life in sales as a good quality affordable string option. I mentioned in various places that I prefer Bassics to Boomers in terms of both tone and longevity. They're not just good strings for the price, they're good strings, period.
