Aside from the upright bass, if I could afford it I'd love to play the contrabassoon. I found some recordings of it on Youtube, and hearing it go down all the way to a low B was worth making my speakers tremble.
However, the price of a contrabassoon means that if I pick up a second instrument somewhere, it'd probably be the cello. Aside from being tuned in fifths instead of fourths, it seems like a lot of bass technique would apply to the bass' little cousin, and to me it's a beautiful, soaring sound.
