Double Bass What other instruments do you play/want to play? (DB forum thread)

Aside from the upright bass, if I could afford it I'd love to play the contrabassoon. I found some recordings of it on Youtube, and hearing it go down all the way to a low B was worth making my speakers tremble.

However, the price of a contrabassoon means that if I pick up a second instrument somewhere, it'd probably be the cello. Aside from being tuned in fifths instead of fourths, it seems like a lot of bass technique would apply to the bass' little cousin, and to me it's a beautiful, soaring sound.

I play upright in a jazz context and love it, but also have a passion for blues/rock electric guitar, and acoustic guitar which i've played for quite a while. Started out my instrument playing at a young age taking piano lessons, played trumpet for a few years as well, took up bass guitar while fairly young, then got into upright, and guitar.... Also play a little drums, but only for fun, my technique on the kit isn't that good but it's just too fun...what can i say i love playing music

I'm currently learning and playing the following:
Double bass, electric bass, tenor sax, piano, and a bit of guitar and percussion.

I'm learning the sax and guitar in school, I take private lessons for the double bass and play in in the school band and youth orchestra, I take private lessons for the electric bass and percussion and play mostly at home (I don't have a drum kit, so usually it's tapping on phone books) and I take private lessons for the piano. When school starts up again, I'll be switching from sax to double bass, though I'll have to bring mine or rent one and bring it, as our school does not have a strings program.

Is "all of them" a viable answer for which ones I wish to learn? If not, I'd be pretty down with learning the trombone/bass trombone, tuba, harpsichord, some sort of viol, or bassoon/contrabassoon. The octobass also looks really cool.

I also play guitar, and I dabble with keyboards, percussion, and vocals, mostly in the form of simple parts for recording or writing or arranging songs.

But the instrument I would really like to add is the viola d'amore. I think it's really neat as an east meets west historical development with a great sound. Failing that (getting a good one, that is), I would like to seriously take up the viola, preferably the largest bodied viola I can find, and I wouldn't mind playing it vertically with a cello endpin as I have seen once or twice.

I HATE banjos. They are at their best when smashed to pieces. Then, they have two reasonable products, ie, some good toothpicks and a purty reasonable ashtray.
