What phaser to upgrade to?

The mooer seems to have a bit of volume suck, which I hate.

A nicer phaser may still have that issue, modulation tends to cut or boost volume at least a bit IME.

Anyways check out some of the Make Sounds Loudly Pedals phasers, he clones a bunch of classic circuits and has a kick ass custom "18 stage phaser" as well:

Right now there is just has a dual phaser and weird custom phaser up. The 75$ one looks sweet, I have a similar one but it has 5 knobs and only 1 switch. It also takes EXP pedals though which can be fun, works a bit glitchily on mine but can do some interesting stuff. Not sure if it actually has 18 stages but that is what some old listings say, has an incredibly thick and versatile tone. Also can do some tremolo stuff at some settings thanks to the switch.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I decided to bite the bullet and get the Moog. It's the last one Long & McQuade has in stock up here in Canada so I kind of lucked out. To me it sounded the best and I can make the real estate work as I have a bigger board I wasn't using.

The Apollo 2 is a monster of versatility. If you're looking for a creative tool, I highly recommend trying it out.

My personal favorite phaser though is the Pigtronix EP-2. It's super syrupy and chewy and unmistakable.

The whole PIGTRONIX line is great.

Source Audio Lunar is one of the best and more versatile phasers that you can find in the market these days. And it can even load other modulations through the Neuro App. I'd totally get one of these if I were you.

I was going to suggest trying flanger or other modulation, with phaser as backup when you're no longer tired of it...

Will the moog after the dirt pedals, it eats all the distortion, none comes through, with it before, it lops off a bunch of top end. No thanks brought it back to the store. Back to my mooer ninety-orange! May pick up a bad stone if I see one in a store but I am trying it with a big muff before I purchase it.

I use the Bad Stone with dirt and the results are great. The discontinued HBE Psylocibe was the best with dirt, but it was a little light in volume without it so it went. The Bad Stone does both well. If your only using phaser with dirt, a used HBE can be had sort of cheap I think.

Having gone through this recently, I started out just wanting a Small Stone and went down the same rabbit hole as you.

When I came back up, I ended up snagging a Pigtronix EP-2. It's a great phaser and a great envelope filter each on it's own, but I'm using it in blended mode because I can, with more emphasis on the phaser side.

You can toggle to either use the foot switch to run EF solo or Phaser solo, or you can toggle it run to as EF or EF+Phaser(LFO).

I run it with a dirt pedal before it, and with one after it. Sounds great.

I have a clone of the Small Stone and I really like it, specially with dirt. One thing that's diferent from the Mooer or other MXR based phasers is that the effect will only get more noticed after 12 o'clock so half the knob is almost useless. But it sounds great and with the colour switch you have more depth on the second setting, if you want a more extreme phasing sound.
One thing that I noticed with phasers is that the ones that sound more subtle on their own are the ones that sound better with dirt. The Moog is a 12 stage phaser so the effet is more pronounced, so maybe that's why you didn't like it after the dirt. One thing that makes it sound better is changing the order of the pedals. Usually we put modulation after the dirt, but in this case it would sound better if you placed the phaser first and then the fuzz. But that's old news since you've already sold the Moog.

I meant to say I am getting a Bad Stone, as long as it works... With the moog, the dirt just didn't come through unfortunately, sounded amazing clean though

I like after for most stuff but the MXR Doubleshot on the bottom channel sounds incredible after phasers IME. Some of the thickest most pleasantly saturated phaser tones I've ever heard, perfect for heavier prog/space rock drool

Specifically with the weird/mystery MSLP phaser though, something about the combo is just perfect. The Boss PH-2 still sounds great but isn't as "full" or thick sounding.

Should've hung on to it for a year or two then sell it for double to triple what you paid for it 'cause... discontinued.
