What rack for GK 1001RBll ?

I just got a second hand Gallien Krueger 1001-RB ll. what is a good rack for it that will also hold a rack tuner (like a Korg)? I am new to bass and I am not sure if racks are just standard size or not . If a plastic feeling SkB style is a good choice than I would go with something like that but from an aesthetic point I really like tolex or that carpet look that I have seen before. Thanks guys. Please post link if you have a retail site of some racks.

That gator is looking sweet. Answer received. Thanks. I am ordering it. Now I gotta get a speaker cab. This project is getting WAY more expensive than a beginner bassist would like to take on. Thanks for the tips.

I suggest roto plastic, like an SKB / Gator. Light enough but still durable, not so cheap tho. I also suggest NOT using a rack tuner. Pedal tuners have a couple big advantages like foot activated tuning mute and you don't have to turn your back to the crowd to tune. But if you are to get a rack tuner, or other rack gear, I'd put it ON TOP of the GK. Heat rises, so extra space on top of the head is better than below. I would get a 3 space and put a spacer in on top until you find something you want to drop in - the empty space is great for cooling!

Oh, one more thing. You really only need a rack if you are going to be gigging / moving the gear on a regular basis. If you are short on cash, I would buy the cab first. GK heads are very well built. They don't *need* a case. I have been dragging around my 700rb for months not in a case. If you are careful with it, no worries. Just saying.

Thanks for the tip. I actually don't have enough money for a speaker cab and I am just plugging into the PA amp for rehearsal. We don't have any gigs in the near future but I do have $130 bucks kicking around so I thought I could buy what I can now . Maybe that's a bad idea, I don't know. So it's sad but I am not even able to use the GK yet.

The shallow skb rotorack is the perfect depth, but the back of the rock doesn't remove completely. It fits in a 3 space, and the gk pulls air from the top. That case is smaller than the gator shallow rack, but the back of the rack does come off, and there are rear rails. It's 2" deeper inside, and probably another 2" external compared to the skb. The gator will hold other amps too. The skb only fits gk and a handful of others because it is so shallow.

It seems that you are open to expanding your equipment. If that is the case, you should consider get something bigger than a 3U. That way, you have room for future expansion - power conditioner, effects, etc.

I currently have 5U of gear. I'm looking for a 10-12U rack and picking up a 3U drawer for stuff. I'd still have 2-4U for any future GAS. I've priced out building one, but it'd be more cost effective to buy one.

I have a little experience with racking these heads:

1st off, I don't like Gator racks because they put their latches on the rack instead of the lids - so, they tend to rattle... also, they are made of thinner plastic than SKB cases... N

Next - Korg rack tuners are shallow enough to not restrict these amp's fan - you can rack a Korg tuner right on top of a 1001rb-II without any problems...

Lastly - I had better luck with the full depth SKB ATA rackcases - the extra space in the back was nice for signal and power cables, and a surge strip...

Speaking from the experience of someone who has gigged a rack for a few years now, I predict you'll soon tire of such a large racked setup... 1U drawers are heavy enough - I would strongly recommend you reconsider your idea... IME/IMO, you're much better off with a separate bag/case for stuff than a drawer adding extra bulk and weight to a gigging rack, unless you're hauling it in a trailer and it's on wheels...

Understood. Rack has been on the back burner for a little while. This thread has re-ignited the GAS. After more searching and thinking, I'm now leaning towards an 8U. Can't go smaller. Eyeballing an older dbx 160x and would like a wireless. That'd give me 7U of gear.

I'm considering getting a GK 700RB II someday and would like to put it in a two space rack, if possible, and was wondering how little space on top of the amp you can get away with and still have the cooling fan be able to function properly?
