Seriously, Jaco was new and different, and people used him up too. Many say that when Jaco released Word of Mouth, folks weren’t ready for his brilliant composing, they just wanted more bass gymnastics.
He dared to go where no bassist had dared go before!
Except maybe for Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, on double bass though, that is.

It’s a combination of creativity, musicality, vision, attitude and chops and tone.
