Seriously, if you have a 4 string, you should have a 5 string, if you have a 5 string, a 4 or 6 string would be a good complement. As for a brand, you can get a really good/great used bass if you are patient. Do your homework before you buy. Get out there a play a bunch of different basses. If you can, preferably with the guys you are working with playing the music you play.
Haven't had the chance to read through all the replies, but I would give serious consideration to the original MIJ fender Jag with the J pup in the neck not the P. They have huge tonal options and versatility, familiar neck and they look great.
You can find them used for about what you're looking to spend. Also if you look for getting another bass in the future, it can replace your Squier so you could flip that one.
Also I found the tribute Kiloton to have a great variety of sounds. Ones that most others don't do.

Have to also endorse G&L. I acquired a 2017 G&L L2500 5 string as a back up for my 2009 Jazz V and am now using the G&L as my primary. The three tone switches make switching modes more easily than the Jazz V with one switch and several knobs, and the neck is thinner, maybe more like your current instrument. While I looked at a new Jazz V which has a thinner neck and allegedly noiseless pickups, the G&L was half the price and sounded better to me for the rock songs I am playing.
Here's a suggestion (that I'm sure you've heard). Get out and play basses. Then buy the one that really stands out to you.
The "best" purchase is the one that you can look at with the same eyes in a few years and still think it's amazing. Kinda like your bride on your wedding day. If that honeymoon phase never really goes away, then you're set.

-Sterling by Music Man Ray34, if you want some active sounds.
-MIM Fender PJ. You'll get the best of both worlds. (Get an active preamp pedal, like aguilar or sadowsky, when you want to add that scooped mid sound)

I love my Jazz Deluxe so much I'd probably go for another one. Maybe a passive jazz with frets, an alder body, and maybe a maple fretboard.
Can't go wrong with a Fender! 
That said, I really like Ibanez. I have the EDB-600 and an SR-300. I love Ibanez necks! I also really like active basses.
Unfortunately the EDB thought it was a Gibson and the headstock snapped. The newer SR has a 6 piece neck so that should not ever happen, also nice and light. Both of these are way under what you are looking at price wise but they do make more expensive ones

Agreed, the Sterling is a blast to play and killer tone. Another bass I've been flogging on some other posts is the MTD Kingston Heir 5. Ridiculous tone and feel.
You gotta just go out and play some to pick one.

Perhaps look into used 80s/90s USA Peaveys. The 84-93 Foundation (like a J) 93/94 Forum or 84-93 Foundation S (PJ) and late 80s/early 90s Fury (P) all have Jazz type necks that feel great. All of these are easily found for under $400, many less than $300. Use the rest of your budget to make sure they are set up well and have the frets dressed, if needed.

Isn't it obvious? BBb Sousaphone, of course! If you are serious, get the four-valve model, little more expensive, low bass really benefits.
