What strings do you use on your precision bass?

Good old standard issue D'Addario XL Nickels. I have tried fifty brands and styles. I was even endorsed for a while by another brand. I always come back to the XL nickels. Bright but not brittle. Nickel is easier on my fingers. My body chemistry doesn't get along with steel. Now that I have three P basses I will ultimately slap some Chromes on one of them just to mix it up.

I bought a 63 AVRI in December and have only replaced the strings with Fender medium gauge roundwound. I don't usually use this string at all but I like how they sound and play on this bass. What do you guys use on your Precision?

I use either DR Low Riders or D'Addarrio Pro Steels. These give me nice solid low end and zing for weeks. I appreciate the way flats sound on a P bass, just aint my style. I've also used a lot of others over time. I recently found that I liked the way the Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies felt and sounded on that bass.

GHS Pressurewounds on one, Chromes on the second one. Chromes are due to be replaced with LaBella Copper White Nylons very shortly.

I like my PB tone to land somwhere in the middle when it comes to timbre. Not too much brightness or zing. And not too much thud either.

FWIW I'm reluctantly coming to the conclusion I don't really care for "bright flats" such as Chromes. They're kinda one-dimensional sounding. I went in with an open mind when I first put them on. And I was determined to give them a fair try. But over time I've gotten tired of their sound. It's not particularly nuanced to my ears. Nothing wrong with it. But I was hoping that with age they'd either mellow out a little more like a standard flat formulation does; or open up like the TIs do. Because to me they just sound mostly like new strings. Which is fine if you like that sort of tone. But it's not my cuppa.

It's a shame too. Because I really like they way they feel. Just the right amount of tension for a flat (IMO) - and smooth as glass.

Please note that this is all purely subjective. So like always - YMMV. :)

I like nickel rounds, namely daddario xl and dr lo-riders... they age well, and allow me to get the tones I want, from thump to growl. I don't like zingy strings (even new nickel rounds are too zingy for me) and I like solid mids, just with some brightness on top. If I grow my stable, I'll probably add flats back into the mix, because rounds can never quite nail the mids that flats give.

Im used to lighter guage on basses I've owned in the past and I also prefer medium gauge on my Precision
