Age 16-19 : Fender MIM Jazz Bass, Midnight Blue (really purple). What POS this was.
Age 19-23 : non-export Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass, Dolphin Gray. Super cool.
Age 23-24 : Musicman Sterling, black.
Age 24 - now: Frankenfender Precision bass, white with Nordstrands. Serious workhorse.
Current Flavor of the Month: Steinberger Synapse.

I haven't bought anything since and wonder if I will ... I can see myself buying my ultimate fretless but this is pretty much it ... maybe I will disappointed like I was with my last Carvin

When I decided I wanted have a go at playing bass properly I decided to go for what I really wanted all along which was an Alembic. Then now appeared in the local Bass Centre so I went to try it out and bought it the following week.
5. Alembic Signature Deluxe 4 string bass, new, (always wanted an alembic, because they sounded so different to anything else I had listened to and since I'd been quietly saving my pennies it was only going to be a matter of time before the right one came my way.) I've now had it for 13yrs.

Holy crap! You guys have been through a lot of basses. I've had a total of 4 different basses and still own two of those.
My first bass was some Japanese model that I bought in 1965 for $40. Then I bought a good amp ('66 Fender Bassman) before I got another bass. The next bass I bought was a 1965 Fender Jazz that I bought in 1966 a few months after I bought the amp (not bad for a 16-yr. old). Paid $175 for that used in 1966 because I was asked to play bass for a group whose bass player was going to play keyboards instead of bass and he needed to sell his bass. Thought I was done with basses at that point but had all my gear stolen in 1976 so I had to start looking again. Was very disappointed in Jazz Basses that I could find then because their necks were so thick and my '65 had a very narrow profile.
Found my current USA Fender Jazz (77-78) in 1985 when I was working part time at Apple Music in Portland, Oregon. As soon as I pulled it off the wall to try it out, it felt like home. Neck had the same feel as my '65. Took me a month to get it, but that's my main bass and will remain so.
I did buy another bass a few years back because the group I was playing in had some songs that needed the low B string on a 5-string and I was tired of tuning my E-string down to D. I bought a 5-string Rogue LX405 Pro because a friend on another forum had a couple of their basses and said they were amazing for their low price. With a money-back guarantee if I didn't like it, I ordered one up and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It's considerably lighter than my Jazz, is very well made and sounds good. I would perhaps consider getting a different 5-string in the future, but you'll have to pry my 4-string Jazz from my cold dead hands.

Between 1981 - 1985: KAPA Continental 32" scale (wish I still had this) -> Fender P fretless -> Ibanez something or other -> Steinberger L2 fretless.
Play Steinberger and nothing else for 28 years.
2013: buy first Cort B4FL - get two more over the years. Great for playing out and not taking a $5000 bass to a crap bar gig. Just plain great instruments.
Also get a Squier Standard 2002 in Shoreline Gold as my first fretted instrument since the eighties. After some work, it's a sublime player. Still won't get much playing time though.
Been through a lot more amps than basses, although I can't quit my SWR Goliaths nor my old Studio 220, which are now pushing 25 years old. Really want a pair of Eden 210XST cabs. But damn, they ain't cheap.
Play Steinberger and nothing else for 28 years.

Ibanez Roadstar II. (used / modified with active emg j's and Schaller hardware) I really liked the neck and 2+2 tuners.
Spector NS2A. (used) A sexy beast for the new band.
*Sold the Ibanez, and Hohner.
Carvin LB75. Wanted a five string. Sweet bass became my only player.
*Sold the Peavey and the Spector.
*Quit the band weeks before it totaly imploded.
*Quit music to start a new life. Sold the Carvin and Fender.
*10 years pass. Getting the urge to noodle. Make my first visit to Guitar Center.
Schecter Studio 5. The neck felt like my old Carvin.
Spector Euro4 LX Spalted. Saw this bass online (store inventory) and had to have it! Nothing is sexier than the NS2.
G&L SB-2 Tribute (used) Felt better than any P or J I ever played. Could'nt pass it up for the price.

Got a Peavey Millienium for birthday in '07...learned on it and loved it...very easy to play

I bought an '83 Ibanez Roadstar II in spring of '13 because it was a great deal and I wanted a P sounding bass...unfortunately had to sell my 1st bass to fund it...cleaned it up and put some flats on it and haven't had GAS since...love its light weight and neck
I gig both Ibanez and Squier equally, dependant on gig and personal preference...

I've been playing about six years. I own five basses - two fours, two fives, and a fretless ABG - plus a bass VI that is more for curiosity, doesn't get played out (so far). Let's see, the "progression" -
Started with a cheap Ibanez Gio to learn on.
When I started playing with people, got a Washburn Taurus T-25 - seemed like it had all the cool stuff I was reading about - neck-through, five strings.
About a year later, got a Yamaha BB415. Really loved the feel and tone of that better. Still have it.
Found a unique fiver by John Toon out in Kansas City. "Looney Toon" became my main bass, really unique. Sold the Washburn to buy it - flat fretboard and narrow string spacing weren't agreeing with me in the long run. The Toon and the BB415 were now my main basses. I did eventually have the Toon's active EMG pickup swapped out for a passive MM humbucker.
About two years ago, I came in second place on Jeopardy and used the consolation money to buy a Carvin SB4000. I had had various 4-strings from time to time and was getting to like the simplicity of them, this was the first really good one I bought. It became more of a common gigging bass when I got into a classic rock trio and didn't need the fivers on gigs. The feel and sound of it has really grown on me and lately it's been the main one I've been playing.
Probably a year or so ago I started feeling I should have a P bass (thanks for the GAS, TB) but I like jazz necks, so I got some parts (thanks TB classifieds) and put my own "Duck Dunn" together with a P body and J neck. That alternated with the Carvin for my classic rock gigging bass, but I wouldn't say has become the new "main bass."
There's also the fretless ABG, a Godin A4. I really like it but only play it out much at church.
Some other basses have come and gone - an MIM P, a Schecter briefly, a couple of SXs, a Michael Kelly ABG - none of them ever gigged or counted as my "main bass."

This is making me remember a couple others -
Musicman Sterling. Forgot about it because it was probably the worst bass for me to own. Got it cheap. Sold it cheaper.
Peavey Foundation - early version. Wanted to love it. Loved the neck, never loved the super ferrite pickups.
Another Silvertone/Danelectro I forgot about. Hollow body, dolphin headstock. Sounded great in an NRBQ way, but was really difficult to play due to the limited notches for the strings.

First was a Hofner violin I got from somebody on Treasure Island. Didn't really want it that much but the price was too good to pass up. Learned what I needed to know from it and got in my first band. Pretty sure I paid about $75 for it.
Somebody else desperately wanted it so I sold it at some obscene profit when Roger Calkins turned me onto a fabulous deal on a '68 Telecaster somebody had dropped a mudbucker into (and moved the original pickup toward the bridge). That set me back $125 I think.
That was it for me until this year when I had to admit the Tele needed serious work or it was going to fall apart. I guess the nut fragmenting was the last straw. So I bought an Ibanez Mikro to fuss with while the restoration proceeds. It's been slow, partly because the Mikro is so much fun. But I'll get there.
Still own two out of the three. Slices of both are visible in my avatar.

You have the longest 3rd finger (both hands) of any man I have seen. Were they enhanced in some way? Just kidding....that's a gift and I'm sure it has helped you. All of my fingers are long and it helps, but dude...you are a freak !!
I've not been playing long, so I've just the one: a Squier VM Jag short scale special. I'd love to have another, but I am so thrilled with mine that there's no pressing need, really. I'm somewhat limited in options in that I play a short scale and don't know that a 34" would work for me (it didn't when I first started). I'd love to find a cheap one somewhere and experiment with customizing it, but at this point, even a relatively cheap one is out of the budget.
First Bass was a Kay short scale and a Sears & Roebuck Bass Amp.
Next was a beat up Precision and a Gibson EB0 in the early 1970's.
Since then I have gone through a Ric, ASAT, a couple of Hofners and a couple of American Standard Jazzes and Precisions.
