At first any good bass would have done. After I got into Rush (late 80's), I wanted a Wal really bad. Once I decided I wanted a 5-string, I was obsessed with the StingRay5 for a year before I finally got one.

Definitely Alembic at first. I got one of their catalogs (still have it 
) that had a 20th Anniversary Series II bass with crazy inlays, and that was it. Then for a long time it was Spector and then Sadowsky, when I started really getting into Metallica and Jason Newsted's basses. Then it was Ken Bebensee for a long time, ever since I saw that Sereph II bass 
Then it was Ken Lawrence after I found out that he made James Hetfield's amazing explorer guitar. I checked out his basses after that and fell in love; bought mine after I first started working and saved up all summer

An Alembic series one after getting introduced to Stanley Clarke's music by my bass teacher in high school. Never did get one, probably won't at this point.

Fender Jazz was my dream Bass...now that I have an older one (73 candy apple red), I'd love to get an older "P" bass to pair it up with.
My dad always went on and on about Fender Precision basses when I was starting out. So, I eventually fell in love with them, and they're still my very favorite, Mexican or American.

Kubicki X-Factor or Steinberger Stick bass
1985
Bought a Hohner B2A in 1988. That kind of satisfied the Steinberger kick and it was/is a great travel bass. Finally picked up a Kubicki in 2006.
Both basses are very much products of their time. The Kubicki is a great bass, but it doesn't get played much. Just very happy to have it...

Black Ric ala Geddy Lee circa 1976. To this day a little bit of my heart remains broken from when Geddy stopped playing Rics.
