What was your dream bass when you first started playing?

It has always been a Fireglow Rickenbacker 4003. It still is. I will have one someday.

I really wanted a pedulla raptor 5, cause it looked stunning in a Bass Player review. Then I played a rosco at the rhythm city (otherwise known as "rip'em silly") in atlanta, and wanted one of those.

Now that I have a sadowsky j, a bongo, fretted/fretless rays and sterlings, and p basses, all I am really gassing for is a nice 60s jazz (which I'll never get)...or a copollo 4 string

when i was 11 i saw and played a ruby red yamaha john myung signature. saved up for two years and bought it. the funny thing was the guy that helped my grab it 2 years earlier was the same guy that sold it to me... and it was the same bass! i guess it was destiny

In '77 it was a fender jazz, then Stanley Clarke came so it became Alembic. Now I like the fender p&j's

I was lucky in that I got a Rickenbacker 4001 only a few years after getting inspired by my first bass hero, Paul McCartney.

But the first bass I actually LUSTED after was one of these:

The first bassist who caught my ear was Geddy Lee at around the Grace Under Pressure time frame. I hadn't specifically paid attention to bass in rock before that. Coincidentally, that was the one time (and tour) when he spent the bulk of his time on the old broomstick (Steinberger)(ref:Wikipedia Geddy Lee). As a result, the first bass I lusted after was the "oh-so-synthetic" carbon fiber bat.

Ended up buying a fretless RBX because of listening to Mick Karn and couldn't afford a Wal, hell not even a BB.

Ached for a Hofner 500/1 just like Macca's since I wanted to play BritPop. After years of trading, looking, patience I was rewarded with a 1965 model. A couple of years newer than Sir Paul's, but suits me fine. Of all the basses I've ever owned, it's the one that I could never sell or trade.

I started playing around '74 and wanted to one day own a Rickenbacker. That day came and went and so did my Rick 4001. It was nice but I didn't find it particularly versatile.

Rickenbacker. It must have taken me 7 or 8 years to save up for one, but I still play most every gig on it.

there were two... first of all, I thought that if I could have a bass exactly like Peter Hook of New Order, a black semi-acoustic bass (later discovered to be a custom bass made by Chris Eccleshall), then life would be perfect...

secondly, there was a black Gibson Grabber G3 bass in the window of my local music shop, going for the princely sum of £359... far more than I could afford in 1987, but if I could find them for that price now i'd have ten

now I don't have a dream bass... as I got better I realised it's not about the bass... my tools (ordinary Fenders) work properly and that's all I need

When I first started I was dreaming for a Hamer Chapparal 5 US (blame Def Lepard and "Love bites") and I was lucky enough to have this as my first bass (2nd hand but nevertheless). Then it progressed to Stealth Status Graphite, but upon trying it head to head with another 60-odd basses I fell in love with a Status Empathy 5.
