Once we hit the 80's I used a Peavey Combo 300 and 115 extension for some years.
It worked well, and relentlessly, despite being bounced down stairs and off trailers and such.
I finally gave it away, to get rid of it.

I'll bet I was the only one on TB who ever owned one. I was 15 years old and it was the least expensive in the store. My dada was paying so he made the decision.

Yup, me too. I hated that amp.

Replaced it w/ a '76 SVT rig.

LOL, I hated it, too. Was always overpowered by the rest of the band, which may have been for the best because it was definitely not a good-sounding bass rig. I, too, moved up to an SVT head and the good ol' Fridge cabinet. I went from never being heard to getting comments after every gig about my sound (mostly good comments, fortunately).

My first amp was an about a 1976 Acoutic 136 combo. I needed an amp. It was my first gig. I rented it from the local Music Center. Paid I think $10 to rent it for the night. The next day I went to return it and bought it instead. I think I paid $100 for it. Great amp. Only used it for about 3 or 4 months when I traded it for my Peavy 400 series Bass head and a dual 15 cabinet.

I'm only 58 but I'll throw in my 2 cents worth anyway..........
1st amp a Silvertone from Sears - jamming away to |Sunshine of your Love" and "Get Ready|"for hours, the Silvertone blatting away in the background.

After that a Garnet (Winnipeg Manitoba mnfct.) endorsed by the Guess Who - pride of Canada - worldwide hits before Canadian content rules kicked in - them and Lightfoot. 10" speaker pretty decent after the Silvertone!

Finally an Ampeg B15S - a "real" amp.

Wow, lots of Silvertone amps. I had one of these back in the mid 60's:




A Kalamazoo with a thundering 30 watts and 2 10" Jensen speakers. The controls were in a flip down compartment in the back.

Then, in a span of 4 years.
1966 Ampeg B15n. used
1970 Ampeg B25B / matching 2x15 cab.
Early 70's Acoustic 370.
Ampeg SVT / 2x15 cab.

By late 80's I was amp crazy. To much to mention.

I started out on guitar, so I used my guitar amp. Music Man HD-130 210 combo. Pretty hilarious watching it vibrate across my buddy's linoleum practice room floor from the bass frequencies the combo was NOT designed to handle! That was in '86. Replaced in '87 with a real bass amp--a Randall head and 2x15 cab--using my high school graduation money. The Randall was stolen in '89... I still have the Music Man, though, and I occasionally run it as a head through bass cabs. Cool sound!

I bought my HH 100 watt s/s amp in 1975 with an old Vox 4x12 cabinet, the cab did not last long but I still gig the amp today.
They were very popular at one time but seem unloved now, it doesn't compare soundwise to my 1972 Hiwatt but it has never let me down and weighs a third as much.
I just throw it in the car and never have to worry about faulty valves or having it stolen. It is onstage at every gig, sometimes only as backup, a really dependable piece of kit.

I'm 62 in November.....

1. Supro Thunderbolt (rental) I was 15
2. Sears Silvertone 1X15 Bass amp I was 16
3. Ampeg B15n I was 17
4. Marshall Major I was 18
5. Acoustic B150 or 450 I was 19

Then I became a working guy so I used various stuff including: Fender Showman, Peavey Dyna Bass, Acoustic B140.. I ended up playing through the Acoustic 450 for the longest. That amp saw a couple of US tours... I kept it until I became a SWR guy when the ST 220 first came out.

All these heads through 2 15's (except the Supro and the B15N)

I started out on guitar but didn't really want to be a musician. When I first started playing bass I liked it a lot, but didn't have the funds for a full gigging rig (my metal band played big shows). I initially ran my bass through a Peavey Renown combo but the only speakers attached was a Peavey 2X18/2X10 cab. Underpowered and sounded like arse. Later I scored an Acoustic 330 which was a guitar head but had power and sounded awesome for bass, so I suppose that was my first real amp. I played the 330 for years while I changes basses and speaker cabs before finally breaking down and buying an SWR Studio 220. The Acoustic was WAY better than the SWR.

So the first time I played bass in a band I used a Peavey Renown (guitar amp)
First good amp for bass was an Acoustic 330 (awesome)
First actual bass amp was an SWR Studio 220 (crap)

70s V4-B, a beast. Sold it just a few years ago. Shown here c1986 paired with a cheapo Kustom 2x15. Stairs in old fraternity houses were always a treat.

When I started playing the bass, it got plugged right into a stereo that also played tapes and records. I don't know why it didn't blow up. After a year or so of doing that, I bought a Kustom Bass-1 combo. It was underpowered, lousy sounding, and weighed a ton for what it was. It was eventually replaced by an Acoustic 126 combo. I don't miss the little boat anchor Kustom one lousy bit!

1967 GRETSCH SUPER BASS 6157 it was a "piggyback" with a 2x12 cab.

Wish I still had that damn thing.
