What was your first bass guitar?

Fernandes Precision copy. 1997, age 15.

It now has a MIM jazz neck, black pickguard, Duncan SP-3 & SMB-4a pickups.

It sat torn apart in storage for a number of years. I recently put it back together, modded it and 15 years later I just played a show with it.

My first bass was a late 1960's Silvertone Beatle/Violin Bass. Someone stole it after a gig at MiraCosta College in Oceanside CA back in 1971. I replaced it with a brand new 72 Jazz which I still own. It is still in almost new condition.

I started out on a borrowed Ibanez P/J. The first bass I owned was a Yamaha BB604 just like this one:

I sold about 5 years ago when I was co-fronting a band. At that time I was playing guitar, harmonica and singing.

It was a decent bass for the money. I could probably buy it back from the guy I sold it to, but it doesn't really fit my sound anymore.

I will say that for anyone starting out that even entry level Yamahas are great basses for the money.

Way back in 1972, a hollow body Strad-O-Lind with flatwounds with a Sears Silvertone piggy back amp with 15' bass speaker (35watts??) The family cat pissed on both of them. I'd like to think she was marking her territory.

I know theres probably a post like this already but I was looking around my room and found the first bass I had. It was a squire affinity j bass I got after waiting a while to save up to get it and for my local music store to get it ordered. It was red and poorly set up when I got it so I set it up as best I could myself. The bridge pickup could never get low enough for me to use without it sounding awful but was over all a good beginners bass and I played it a lot. So what was your first bass? Where did it come from? How good or bad was it? Just post stuff along the lines of those questions.

Mine was an '87 Squier MIJ Jazz, black with white pickguard. Price, with case was $320-340 (can't recall). I traded in an old Memphis strat copy that my oldest brother abandoned, which brought the price down to 240.

I was in a serious Jason Newsted/David Ellefson phase back then. I played with Fender white heavy picks, which were like 10 cents a piece. Back then, I knew bupkus about neck relief/intonation/set ups and I am sure the setup was shite, but was a fun bass. I did learn a thing or two later, and found out how to tweak it. Still wish I had it.
