Mine was a pawnshop Fender that cost about 80$ 13 years ago. It was in such a bad shape... I knew it was bad but I used it anyway, until I was sure that I love playing music. After one year I got a Yamaha RBX PJ and few months latter I got a Yamaha BBN5II ( I still have that bass ).
My first bass was a 1972 Kimberly A-200.

I had a Lyle Bass somewhere in the mid 60's. I thought it was a piece of junk. I always longed for the Fender guitars and basses in the window of the local music store. My teacher worked there at the time, and if I was a real good boy, he would let me play one on occasion during my lesson. The pic below was taken from the internet.

My first bass was a Mako TPB-2 I got used last November for $40. The first time I played it the nut broke. By the time I had it fixed, I had picked up a Squier VM Jaguar SS, so the Mako got sold for a fairly nice overall profit without ever really being played.
So I guess my real first bass was the Squier Jag SS, which I absolutely adored for the first 4 months. Then I switched to 34" scale.
Although I would have loved to keep the little Jag, someone who was looking for a Short Scale offered me an MIM Fender Precision in trade for it. I mean who would not have jumped on that...
I'd really miss the Jag were it not for the fact I love the MIM Precision LOL!
So I guess my real first bass was the Squier Jag SS, which I absolutely adored for the first 4 months. Then I switched to 34" scale.

My first bass was a Invalid Link Removed which I got for $60 used off of ebay about a year ago.
After several months of playing other basses and not touching it, I finally messed around with it again. I loved the neck so much that I took it off that ridiculous body and put it on a body I had laying around.
It doesn't or look or sound great, but it's very nice to play now.

I started off on an old Kay Bass. Early 60's or late 50's. The picture is me and the bass around 1961 or 1962.
Very cool picture. I had the same style eye glasses when I was 10 in 1962

I was 21 at that time (1989) and I decided to start playing bass guitar. At that time I just knew that the thing had four strings. So I went to my favourite record shop in Pisa (Italy) who had a board where there were also flyers of people selling instruments and I spotted "Vendo basso gibson 50'000 Lire" (Selling Gibson bass for 50'000 lire (25 $). I was a pennyless student then, so I said, well the important is that it has 4 strings, the price is good, Gibson is a name I know.
I called the guy, I went to his house and sold me his bass, a 1967/8 EB-0. He told be that he was selling since he preferred his Candy Apple Red precision bass.
Now I have 25 basses, however the EB 0 is still my favourite when I want play loud!

Back in 1982 my friend/guitarist bought some anonymous short scale at a garage sale in the USA (10$!), an it was our first bass: we used to alternate in playing, until he decided to be a full-time guitarist and I had to switch to bass. I bought me a nice Rickenbacker, and then the whole story began...
I wish I could still play that strange anonymous thing (Teisco? Kay? who knows?): I asked him to borrow, or I'd even buy it, but he doesn't know wher that bass should be gone. Sad...

in 2005 with my very first paycheck i bought a Peavey Millennium BXP 4. i just finnished the 10th grade. i wish i still had it.
Add me to the RBX170 club, that was a nice bass, I actually traded that one in for a RBX370 a couple years down the road. Family friends own a music store and are yamaha dealers so I got them basically at cost.
Christmas 1980 - a 2-color sunburst Sears Silvertone Jazz Bass knock-off, with 15w amp, neck strap, cable and a "how to play bass" book. I played that bass for the next 3 years, saving every penny I earned until I could afford my first real bass, an Ibanez Musician.
