Jay Turser P-Clone/FSO. $100 used in awful condition (badly warped pick guard, orange furry strings, etc...) with the straightest neck in the music store. I cleaned it up, chopped the pick guard, shielded it and tidied the wiring. The neck dive was phenomenal, so I bolted a 2.5lb weight through the back of the electronics cavity. Later it received a full body length thumb rest and a ramp once in a while. It gigged for a decade with its companion Ampeg 100w combo. Both were victims of the desert in the end.
Mine was an old Kay hollow body with a lipstick pickup similar to this one in the pic. The strings were at least 1/2 inch off the fretboard and it played and sounded like

'83 Japanese SQ Squier Series Fender P-Bass (EMG Pick-ups; Kahler Tremolo Bridge) I got off Daddy's Junky Music catalog for I think $200 in the early '90s. I still have it but the neck is on a Japanese Jazz body right now.
Got it in 1965, used Epiphone Newport Deluxe, with case, purchased from friend, $100.

Mine was a gibson eb0. 1968 at my high school.
A Rickenbacker 4001 in Fireglo - a decent bass to start out on, but I wouldn't want one today. Things it had I didn't like:
1) Hum
2) sharp edges
3) truss rods I didn't really understand
4) a bridge that didn't quite sit down on the body in the back

It was a Harmony H22, bought for fifty bucks I borrowed from our drummer's uncle. May? 1966, I was a sophomore in high school. Here we are probably the next year, 1967, playing at the local Civic Center-- band name was the Purple Grackle, and we were fifteen-yr-old small town

This one. Got it 44 years ago, when I was 17.
A Conrad Beatle bass . I bought it from one of my big brothers friends for $75 in 1968 .Looked like a Hofner and got me by while I learned how to play it . My brother had guitars around so I had been playing one note tunes on them for a while so when I got the bass I kind of knew what to do . I went to some friends band practice before I bought that bass and sat in on a couple songs . They asked me to play with them , that's why I had a need to buy one . Everybody back then wanted to be in a band because of the Beatles . I played it through my brothers 65 Fender Bandmaster . It made enough sound I could hear myself but the tone was pretty bad . No I didn't blow the speakers .
